Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Seattle Mariners’ 8-7 loss to the Texas Rangers

Asdrubal Cabrera’s run-scoring double in the ninth inning snapped a tie and gave the Texas Rangers an 8-7 victory against the host Seattle Mariners on Wednesday afternoon.

Jesse Chavez (1-1), who served as the opener in Tuesday’s game and struck out the side in the first, pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the victory. Fellow right-hander Shawn Kelley worked out of a jam in the ninth, getting a game-ending double play, for his sixth save of the season.

With two outs in the ninth, Nomar Mazara and Cabrera hit back-to-back doubles to left off Seattle right-hander Anthony Bass (0-1).

Tim Beckham and Mitch Haniger hit two-run homers for the Mariners, who lost for the 11th time in their past 13 games.

The lead changed hands five times.

Of note

SS J.P. Crawford was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left ankle and IF Dylan Moore was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. Crawford suffered the injury in the eighth inning Tuesday when trying to scramble back to third base after teammate Mallex Smith was caught in a rundown.

Our take from Right Field

It seems the revamped bullpen – the M’s made moves with relievers nearly every day last week – isn’t any better than the previous version. After a shaky first inning in which he allowed three runs, LHP Wade LeBlanc shut down the Rangers for the next four innings before the bullpen blew it.

The M’s open a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels at 7:10 p.m. Thursday at T-Mobile Park. LHP Yusei Kikuchi (3-2, 3.82 ERA) is scheduled to start for Seattle. The Angels plan to use an opener before RHP Felix Pena comes in.
