Salvation Army looking to hire 25 people to staff new Spokane homeless shelter

The Salvation Army is hiring 25 employees to staff a new emergency homeless shelter in North Central Spokane in hopes of opening the facility by mid-August.

The shelter at 55 W. Mission Ave. is in the former Spokane Housing Authority Building, which the county purchased from the Housing Authority after it moved a few blocks away. The Salvation Army and the City of Spokane, which is managing homeless programs in the area, hope to open the shelter when the city’s contract to house the homeless at the Spokane Arena expires later this month.

According to a news release from the Salvation army, the organization is looking to hire five full-time employees who will make $14.50 and an hour and have benefits, and 20 workers who will make $14 an hour and work 28 hours a week.

Among the requirements for the jobs, applicants for the full-time positions must have a high school diploma or GED, a driver’s license, pass a regular background check and pass a driver’s background check. They may be required to work nights or weekends and be on call and work shifts of up to 12 hours.

Applicants for the 20 part-time positions also must have a high school diploma or GED and be able to pass a background check as well, and could also work long shifts, on weekends or on holidays.

According to the news release from the Salvation Army, applicants for both positions must have “a compassion for homeless individuals and want to help them move forward in life.”

Employees also will receive training before they begin work.

Applications for both positions can be found online by searching “The Salvation Army Spokane” on www.indeed.com. Applicants can also call (509) 325-6810 for more information.
