Expo Idaho puts moratorium on future gun shows after 2 accidental shootings in 3 years; this weekend’s show still on

Expo Idaho, home of the Western Idaho Fair in Ada County, has put a moratorium on gun shows, the Idaho Statesman reports today, after two accidental firearm discharges at gun shows there in the past three years. This weekend’s Lewis Clark Trader gun show will be allowed to proceed because it already had been planned and advertised, but an indefinite moratorium will kick in after this show, to allow Ada County to do a thorough review of safety policies and practices.

The move cancels gun shows the same promoter had planned for Expo Idaho in February and March. In a Dec. 30 letter to the promoter, county commissioners wrote, “There would be no question about proceeding with the current shows you’ve booked if there had not been a history of weapons discharges in connection with shows at Expo Idaho. Notwithstanding our support of Second Amendment rights, we are concerned about the safety of patrons and vendors in our facilities during, and in preparation for, gun shows, including the ones you produce.”

During an Oct. 31 gun show at Expo Idaho organized by the same promoter, two men were shot in the leg before the show in an accidental gun discharge. In April 2013, at a show presented by Ee-da-how Long Rifles Inc., two people were injured, including a Mountain Home airman who was partially blinded when shrapnel flew into his eye, in an incident that led to a lawsuit and settlement.
