Bread Not for the Birds

Thanks to both Joe Butler and Bart Mihailovich for pointing out my error. Apparently, bread is not good for birds, so please disregard my suggestion to feed your stale bread to them (in Packaged for One). For the reason, go to either the related comment on this page or link to Bart's blog at http://www.downtoearthnw.com/blogs/down-earth/2008/dec/22/another-green-monday/.
In an effort to come up with an alternative way to dispose of stale (or even slightly moldy) bread, I've turned to the creativity of the ancient Egyptians.
Here's a recipe that's a (real) oldie but a goodie:

  • Crumble the bread into small chunks.
  • Using a sieve, slowly strain water through the bread into a large jar (or keg if you've got one laying around).
  • Add additional yeast to the mixture.
  • Add flavoring element of your choice. Egyptians occasionally used dates. You may prefer berries or honey.
  • Allow to ferment.
  • Throw a party.

I've tried a variation on this recipe before, and it wasn't half bad. It was a bit mealy, but definitely drinkable if you avoid the dregs.
For the less adventurous, you could toast your bread into croutons which tend to keep well, or throw them in the blender to make breadcrumbs.
Does anyone know if we can still feed the squirrels?
