City Editor Explains How We Can Cover Duncan

Re: that question yesterday from Dave Laird/News is a Conversation: "How will you ever find a reporter who can unemotionally report the truth about Duncan's trial?"

That's both an easy question and a difficult question, City Editor Carla Savalli said in today's news meeting. In short, much like a police officer, soldier, doctor or lawyer, reporters have a duty to not let their emotions interfere with their professional judgment (if you think we've got it tough, put yourself in the shoes of Duncan's defense attorney).

That said, though, we're not pretending to be immune to the horrors that are likely to unfold in the courtroom, and Savalli has been talking with Taryn Brodwater, the lead reporter on this story, about ways to mentally prepare for what's coming.

"We would be robots if we didn't get freaked out by some of this stuff," she said.
