Nick: Why Are Idaho R’s Pooh-Poohing Craig Flap?

Let's pretend for a few minutes that there'd never been any rumors about Larry Craig being gay. I know it's hard to do given what's happened in the last few days. However, picture another elected official--let's say Bill Sali--who, while having had many insults thrown at him, has never been accused of being gay. If he was busted for the same thing, hid it from his staff, family, friends, and constituents for six weeks, plead guilty and then, once the story broke claimed it was all a "misunderstanding", would it really be any different? I'd say it shouldn't be. The fact is that the Senator deliberately covered up a crime he committed. And now he's trying to weasel his way out of it. Dismiss the potential hypocrisy, dismiss the tawdriness of the situation. I understand why the theocrats such as Bryan Fisher would throw him under the bus, as well as the national party. However, in law and order Idaho, I'm surprised how many conservative Idahoans are trying to pooh-pooh this. They're the same ones who wailed the loudest over Bill Clinton's desescration of the Oval Office--even though the act itself, while beneath a president, was not unlawful.
