City Files Suit Against Sims, Macy
After nearly a year of finagling, the city of Coeur d'Alene filed a suit against Tom Macy and Kathy Sims of the Concerned Taxpayers of Kootenai County today. City Attorney Mike Gridley claims Concerned Taxpayers violated a number of campaign finance disclosure laws, as part of an eleventh-hour attack ad they circulated against incumbents in the 2007 municipal elections, and owe more than $20,000 in penalties. These include: accepting contributions and accruing expenses before a treasurer was named; filing inaccurate and untimely paperwork; and initiatially filing finance statements in an attempt to conceal contributors. As an example of the questionable documentation, Gridley told Huckleberries, that Concerned Taxpayers initially reported that 156 contributors had donated $3,500 for the ad. Later, they changed the number to be 62 donations of $50 apiece with a few more at $100 apiece. Neither Sims or Macy responded to the city's final deadline of 5 p.m. Friday.
