Taryn: In praise of school unies

tarynahecker (RE: Poll: Don't trust dress-code makers): I actually find it more affordable to clothe the kids in their uniforms. I get a lot of clothes at thrift stores AND the kids' school also has a clothing exchange. Four pairs of pants and four shirts plus a sweatshirt and coat is an easy rotation for the school week. It costs about $2 per shirt to get the logo screenprinted on. From my perspective, it's more affordable. There's not a pressure to have certain brand names of clothing. A pair of khakis from Wal-Mart looks pretty dang close to a pair from LL Bean.

DFO: I wore a school uniform once -- as an eighth-grader at St. Thomas Catholic School in Oroville, Calif. I was enrolled in only one year at the school. And the uniforms, I recall, were hideous. Salt-and-pepper cordoroy, with a white shirt and dress shoes. My parents and family of six children, plus our grandfather, were squeaking by on a dairy. The only good thing that can be said about the uniforms? Everyone looked the same. You couldn't tell which families were richer and which were poorer by looking at the kids' clothes. So I guess the uniforms had a decent purpose.

Question: Have you or your kids ever worn a uniform?
