This movie’s funnier than a rubber crutch

It’s a slow Friday afternoon, and I’m trying to write next week’s movie column. But two of my editors keep bombarding me with nasty comments they're finding about the ostensible comedy “Daddy Day Camp.”

I’m giving in. The barbs being thrown at this cinematic turkey are just too clever to ignore. Here are some of the better ones, taken from the movie-review site Rotten Tomatoes:

“The minstrelsy of (Cuba) Gooding Jr.’s performance is abhorrent but no more offensive than the showboating that won him the Oscar.” – Ed Gonzalez, Slant Magazine

“About as much fun as being given a wedgie and hung from the camp flagpole.” – Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail

“Not quite as funny as a perforated ulcer.” – Geoff Pevere, Toronto Mail

“Poison ivy would be less painful.” – Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter

“The screenplay is attributed to three writers. That means if the film’s funny parts were divided evenly among them, they each wrote zero.” – Eric D. Snider

"Perhaps a productive use for ‘Daddy Day Camp’ may be found among death row inmates who wish to make their final minutes feel like weeks." – Gary Thompson, Philadelphia Daily News

Below: Cuba Gooding Jr., pointing to the Oscar that he won as Best Supporting Actor for “Jerry Maguire,” better hope the Academy doesn't do a recount after screening “Daddy Day Camp.”
