Diversity of creatures lured to University of Idaho botanical garden

WILDLIFE WATCHING -- Cold weather is magic for bird watching.

Naturalist Terry Gray of Moscow devoted three hours to walking through the University of Idaho Arboretum and Botanical Garden on a recent brisk morning and reported observing 22 bird species.

He also captured photographs of most of them, such as the handsome specimens above.

Gray has had good luck discovering more creatures than birds at the garden.

On Oct. 15, he observed and photographed one of the smallest butterflies in the world. The Western Pygmy-Blue, Brephidium exile,  was way north of its range

"The butterfly is the size of a dime or slightly smaller and is gorgeous," he said. "Not sure why it was as far north as it was but was a very interesting find."
