This week’s column and a preview of next week’s feature
There were nice comments online about this week's Then and Now feature about Playland Pier. Many people still remember the small, somewhat rundown group of attractions that made the Coeur d'Alene waterfront a fun place to hang out on a warm summer day. I heard from Teri Burch, my son's former kindergarten teacher, who told me that manager W. Earl Somers was her grandfather.
In the coming week, I hope to write about Greenough's grocery, specifically the one at Sixth Ave. and Washington St. It opened in 1929. An earlier store had opened downtown at Sprague and Howard. The Greenough brothers had stores in the Silver Valley before that. I would appreciate any memories you might care to share about the stores the Greenough brothers started. A friend said he always remembered the South Hill store as Greenough's IGA.
