The Sinop Kale Excavation team, with the support of multiple institutions including Gonzaga University, continues its work on the Black Sea coast of northern Turkey, at the site of ancient Sinope. In circa 630 BC, a Greek colony from the city of Miletus was created on the Sinopean peninsula, bringing a new population to the area to join the earlier inhabitants of the region. During the last two seasons (2016-17), the excavation team has explored this early colony period, shedding new light on activity in the area dating to the early Iron Age (7th-6th centuries BC). This lecture will discuss new discoveries made by the team since its initial 2015 season, providing members of the Spokane community with an update on this locally-sponsored field project.
