A senator, who became famous for killing a notorious outlaw, returns for the funeral of an old friend and tells the truth about his deed. This film about statehood, frontier politics and the taming of the Wild West by the rule of law, was directed by the legendary John Ford, who based his James Stewart-John Wayne vehicle on a short-story by the late, revered Montana author Dorothy M.
