Introduced by Shaun Higgins of KSPS Public Television’s “Saturday Night Cinema.” This film is the only East German film (a GDR-Czech production) to be nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. In a Jewish ghetto in central Europe, 1944, Jakob Heym eavesdrops on a German radio broadcast announcing the Soviet Army is making slow by steady progress towards central Europe. Now that others know he has a radio in the ghetto (a crime punishable by death), Jakob must come up with more and more stories to hide his secret. Directed by Frank Beyer. 1974. 100 minutes.
