Neighborhood newcomers look forward to settling in

Afternoon sun splashed through oversized kitchen and living room windows. I lingered near a sliding door to the deck that within days would be ours, but for now still held plastic deck chairs and an ash tray with stale butts that belonged to the couple selling us their house. Yep, it’s true. Molly and I found a place to make our own! We hadn’t yet seen it in the late afternoon and I was dazzled by the sunshiney main room.

‘Soul Men’ tribute to Mac’s genius

We know we’ve lost Bernie Mac. And it takes only about 10 minutes of his next-to-last screen appearance, in “Soul Men,” to show us just what we’ve lost. Nobody could go bug-eye to bug-eye, toe to toe and “mofo” to “mofo” with the great Samuel L. Jackson like Bernie Mac.

And 10 more make 100

It takes a long time to run down a list of 100 films, especially when those films are supposed to the ones you need to see before you die. But with this column, I complete my list (you can catch the full 100 on my blog at www.spokane7.com/blogs /moviesandmore).

Civic Theatre stages ‘Sweeney Todd’

It’s a two-nights-only benefit performance staged “in concert,” which means it’s not a fully staged musical. Yet it may be one of the Spokane Civic Theatre’s most anticipated productions of the season. In fact, director Yvonne A.K. Johnson said she’s as proud of “Sweeney Todd” as she has been of anything in her four-year tenure at the Civic.

Treat or trick?

For some people, wearing a mask actually increases the odds of attracting someone from the opposite (or same) sex. So Halloween falling on a weekend is a good thing for more reasons than just the rows of parties that will be lined up around town like headstones in a cemetery.

‘Zack and Miri’ unites unlikely comic pair

The extreme opposites within Kevin Smith’s filmmaking personality coexist in “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” to hit-and-miss effect. Yes, there is a ton of sex as the title would suggest, including one scene that is so incredibly wrong, words don’t even begin to describe it. A proliferation of raw, raunchy dialogue has always been one of the writer-director’s preferred tactics, dating back to his pioneering 1994 debut, “Clerks,” and that’s certainly true this time, as well – actually, it’s more relevant than usual.

Creating & Sustaining Community Gardens

The plentiful bounty that can come from a community garden in your neighborhood doesn’t just refer to the food that will be harvested, but to the bonds that are formed and the barriers that will be dissolved.

Main Market Co-Op designed to expand, improve community

Dream. Build. Learn. These three small words have the potential to mean big things—especially when next to each other. As such, they have become the mantra for Main Market—a consumer food co-op providing daily, central access to healthy, sustainable food that supports our region’s farmers and fishermen. Set to open in downtown Spokane in fall 2009, Main Market will be the only retail grocery of its kind in our area, where members are owners with a voice in decision-making.

Be very afraid

From the moment we leave the womb, we are forced to face fear. This is only natural, since we come from people who had to brave real-life lions, tigers and bears on a daily basis. When you never know what’s going to jump out at you, it’s always a good idea to be prepared.
