The most worthwhile in the genre

Several movies have tackled the war on terror, but nobody has wanted to see any of them, either because the topic is too daunting or too much of a downer, or it’s simply still too soon after 9/11. Add “Body of Lies” to that list, even though it’s probably the most worthwhile and least preachy of the bunch.

A guaranteed horrific time

They might as well call him Spokane’s Rob Zombie. Rob Paine, our local ’80s horror movie enthusiast, has resurrected his Month of Macabre, featuring campy scary movies at area bars and culminating with a costume party and zombie march at the end of the month.

A weighty Hollywood issue

Expect a bear-size crowd

When Minus the Bear came through on its release tour for “Planet of Ice,” it was one of the most well-attended shows at The Service Station last year, right up their with Shiny Toy Guns and Rocky Votolato. Almost exactly one year later, the Seattle math-rock quintet is expected to once again pack the 500-plus venue, as Minus the Bear has only raised its stock this year by playing big-time festival gigs this summer such as Bonnaroo and Coachella.

Nick, Norah and near-perfect love

“Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” is one of those magical, near-perfect youth romances, a film that so vividly reminds you of the glories of young love that you wish you were 18 again, full of hope, not jaded by life and love lost. Sassy, savvy and wistful, it throws two strangers together for one wild, unsupervised night in Manhattan, a night of searching for a lost, drunken friend and a mysterious, mythic band about to play an impromptu gig, of nightclubs that apparently never card anybody – even kids too young to drink.

Plenty of ways to celebrate GLBT History Month

Music, fashion, politics, theater, literature and sports. The icons of these industries help define our culture. Those musicians and designers, actors and writers, politicians and athletes cross racial and gender lines, representing our nation as a whole. Each field includes those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, as well, making October’s GLBT History Month all the more fun to celebrate. The Inland Northwest, thanks to several LGBT organizations, has a brilliant lineup of events to look forward to, all the way through the second weekend in November.
