Sushi on the South Hill

If Eastern Washington flooded, the South Hill could end up an island. Maybe that's what Noel Macapagal has in mind with his recently opened island cuisine and sushi fusion joint.

Tunes for ‘toons

Daniel Goldmark had it pretty tough growing up. He wasn't allowed to watch television during the week. No exceptions. Not even for the "MASH" finale. Instead, Goldmark did productive things such as read books and practice the piano, clarinet and saxophone. Hey, don't hold it against him, his parents made him. But Goldmark made the most of his TV time on weekends, soaking in hours of Popeye, Bugs Bunny and "Tom and Jerry."

‘Zorro’ strikes again

Movie lightning rarely strikes twice in the same place. But in the case of the "Zorro" sequel, "The Legend of Zorro," it hits close enough to set off sparks. It's not quite as much fun as watching Antonio Banderas and a then-unknown Catherine Zeta-Jones mix it up and mush it up for the first time, as they did back in 1998. But the cast and crew reunite for a spirited revival of the old-fashioned and supremely entertaining "Legend."

‘Down and Derby’ only occasionally entertaining

"Down and Derby" is the longest "Malcolm in the Middle" episode ever. Also the blandest. It's a nice, occasionally funny movie that falls into a weird place: It's about a subject that will interest children (Cub Scouting's annual wood-car race, the Pinewood Derby), but it focuses on adults (the victory-obsessed parents of said Cub Scouts). And it's too predictable and TV-movie generic to appeal to anyone older than, say, 5.

eat

Changes in food habits Compared to 1985, Americans are eating more takeout, skipping more main meals and using our microwave ovens more. And when we step on the scale, more of us wish we could lose 20 pounds. These are some of the findings by the NPD Group in its "Eating Patterns in America" report. The Chicago-based consumer research firm has been tracking Americans' eating habits for 25 years. This year's report shows how we have changed over the past two decades. Among the key findings:

Supporting equality issues is important for everyone

A full-page ad that ran last week in The Spokesman- Review picturing a mother, father and three teenage children got me thinking about the A in LGBTQA in a whole new way. The copy surrounding the family photo read, "Our community is stronger when everyone is treated fairly. That is why we, as straight people, speak out today in support of equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people." The ad ran Oct. 11, National Coming Out Day. And that's exactly what this family did – come out. The "allies" in the gay community who choose to be public about their support risk assumptions, stereotypes and general ill-will being levied toward them as much as any gay person.

A chaotic, colorful thriller

Tony Scott doesn't make movies. He makes grand mal seizures, loud, dizzy blizzards of music, violence and too many edits to count. "Domino," his latest, aims to be another "True Romance." It's a goofy and bloody and assaultive all-star extravaganza, and an absurd burlesque of the life of movie-star daughter and model-turned-bounty hunter Domino Harvey.

‘Elizabethtown’ not worth visiting

A list of the klutzy things in "Elizabethtown": Susan Sarandon's role; Orlando Bloom's charm-free performance; most of Kirsten Dunst's dialogue; the decision to have a character express her grief through tap-dancing; the cut of Alec Baldwin's sports coat; the absence of African-Americans in a Kentucky town where the population is 10 percent black; and the movie's second, third, fourth, sixth and eighth endings. I want to be specific here because "Elizabethtown" is clearly intended as a serious work of art, and it is seriously disappointing. Cameron Crowe, who wrote and directed it (along with such fine films as "Jerry Maguire") is a talented man out of touch with his gifts. He wrote a script that goes on and on without saying anything and nudged his actors into performances that have no connection with the way people behave.
