Sarah on her Carrie role, perfume, Oscar …

One's a little bit country (from Nelsonville, Ohio). One's a little bit street (from the Bronx). But one distinction that Sarah Jessica Parker, 40, and Jennifer Lopez, 35, share is that they are two of the top trendsetters of the last decade. They've helped redefine glamour for women across the country, via little revolutions – from giant flower pins and Manolo Blahniks to velour sweats and, well, Manolo Blahniks.

Schooled in single malt science

George Thorogood and "Swingers" taught me all I used to know about Scotch. I'd pour single malts over rocks, drink shots of Scotch alongside Bourbon and beer, and when I had the money, "any Glen" would do.

Some kids are just not that accepting

while. His friend, our neighbor, asked what I was doing living at his house. "She's my family; she and my mom are getting married," he answered. "Eww, gross, that's sick. That's so gay," the 6-year-old neighbor responded.

Spokane deputies complete Hazzard duty

It took some digging, but I sleuthed out the identity of the sheriff's deputy who pulled a foolish prank earlier this month on Spokane streets that led to two damaged cop cars and gave the department a big ol' black eye. In case you didn't read reporter Jonathan Brunt's account of the fiasco in Tuesday's Spokesman- Review, here's the gist: A deputy hit the flashers Oct. 3 and chased two colleagues in an unmarked Mustang, who played along with the dangerous joke.

Swords’ new album a top pick for critics’ best

There is something elite about the highly touted new album "Metropolis" by Swords. Bulging tension. Stormwater melodies. Frantic counter-rhythms. Swirling guitar/violin/synth lines. It starts where fans of Portland's favorite chamber-rock experimentalists would expect, but where it goes from there shows the sort of progressive brilliance the sextet merely hinted at with its first self-titled EP (2001 on Absolutely Kosher) and subsequent full-length, "Entertainment Is Over If You Want It" (2003 on Arena Rock) – both released under the band's former name The Swords Project.

The women of ‘Junebug’ make the movie

It's been at least five minutes since anyone reminded us that, gosh, Southerners sure are quirky. So let us turn to Sundance-darling "Junebug" to remember that people living below the Mason- Dixon line are colorful folks who smoke too much, don't communicate enough and decorate their houses with tacky homemade arts and crafts. At the heart of the film are two intriguing women: glossy, well-educated art dealer Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz) and Ashley, a bright-eyed, pregnant chatterbox (Amy Adams). Madeleine and her laconic husband George (Alessandro Nivola) drive from Chicago to North Carolina to meet a folk artist whose bizarre works Madeleine would like to show. They'll also visit George's nearby family. Ashley, married to George's sulky brother Johnny (Benjamin McKenzie), greets Madeleine and George with a gushing enthusiasm inappropriate even for royalty.

Using your sick days as mental health days

CHICAGO – When Carol Mullen was a cashier for the old Venture retail store back in the mid-1980s, she was invited to a Fourth of July picnic that she just had to attend. Problem was, Mullen was scheduled to work. The 19-year-old made a grown-up decision: She called in sick.

‘Baraka’ shows like an abstract painting

Sometimes films that seem to say nothing end up saying just about everything that's worth putting in words. Or, in the case of the 1992 film "Baraka," everything that's worth putting in images accompanied by music.

Polanski’s ‘Oliver Twist’ is too straight

After the devastating emotional rawness of Roman Polanski's Holocaust drama "The Pianist," the director's take on Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" is an oddly distant and disappointing affair. Other than its rich, technically sumptuous production values and a wickedly gnarled performance by Ben Kingsley as den-of-thieves master Fagin, Polanski's "Oliver Twist" has little to distinguish it from the many other fine and proper adaptations of the orphan boy's adventures.

Anthony's does the view justice with a stylish atmosphere, a well-managed dining room and an array of high-quality seafood dishes. Offerings change seasonally, yet you should always be able to count on the alder-planked salmon. Give the Dungeness crab cakes a try as well. Otherwise, pay close attention to the fresh sheet. Current owner Al Jouan has spiffed up the menu and converted it into a relatively high-end dining experience, with crisp linens on the tables and classical arias floating overhead. The menu reflects this new sophistication as well, especially in the Lobster Gnocchi, an outstanding langoustine sauté flavored with truffle oil. Even the Chicken Cacciatore has been spiffed up to become a sauté dish. Traditionalists can still find top-quality ravioli, cannelloni and other pasta dishes. Don't miss out on the rich and earthy house Mushroom Soup. (April 2005)Kim Do (N)2018 N. Try the Pho, the beef- or chicken-based Vietnamese soups. With generous garnishes of fresh basil and bean sprouts, think of it as a soup and salad combo, all in one. Or try one of the many excellent vermicelli rice-noodle dishes, or the curry. You might want to avoid anything with tendon, unless you're a Vietnamese food veteran, or just plain adventurous. It's tasty, but gelatinous. The translucent spring rolls are a must. And don't forget to try the sweet iced coffee, made with condensed milk. Double shot of fear

Spokane police say there has been an increase of reports from women who think they have been victims of illicit "date-rape" drugs used to leave them incoherent, sometimes so they can be easily raped. Here are the stories of two Spokane women, who believe they were drugged, and consider themselves lucky not to have become victims of rape. They agreed to talk in the hope that other women will become more vigilant. Lucky to be alive
