Oktoberfest and Greek Dinner Festival fill weekend calendar

Dust off the lederhosen and dirndl: The Washington Beer Commission is hosting an Oktoberfest celebration Friday through Sunday at Riverfront Park. Beer lovers can hoist a stein for German toasts at the event featuring 20 Washington breweries pouring more than 50 beers. The celebration will run Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

Winner’s original recipe differs slightly

Spokane cooking teacher Paula Mannino loved competing in the LG Electronics “Taste of Something Better” contest, but she was concerned about a few changes the company made to her recipe before sharing it with The Spokesman-Review for a story in last week’s Food section. Mannino says the differences may seem small, but she fears that the texture of the dish suffers and she’s worried someone could choke on the pieces of a bay leaf if they follow the instructions in the edited recipe to crumble it before adding it to the polenta. Instead, she recommends simply breaking the bay leaf in half so the pieces are easy to find and remove before serving.

I hate to admit defeat, but I know a losing battle when I see one. I’m not much of a gardener to begin with and the weather this year was not kind to amateurs. Everything was slow to ripen, but the tomatoes in my backyard were particularly pathetic this year.

Best of lentil festival cook-off combines peppers, cheese, bacon

The winning recipe from the 2010 Legendary Lentil Cook-off is a tartlet that showcases lentils, vegetables, herbs, cheese and bacon in mini phyllo shells. Linda Rohr, of Darien, Conn., took home the top prize of $1,000 for her Lovely Little Lentil Tartlets. The tasters in Reaney Park at this year’s Lentil Festival chose the winner of the contest after tasting the top six entries.
