Fresh Sheet: Share your stories of Dorothy Dean

This month marks the 75th anniversary of The Spokesman-Review’s beloved Dorothy Dean Homemakers Service. The newspaper launched its home economics department in 1935 with a test kitchen and cooking school for homemakers. Home economists also sent out recipe leaflets and hosted a phone line to answer questions before closing in 1983.

At least there’s usually one component that I can offer separately that will keep them from pushing away from the table hungry – chicken out of the potpie or meatballs separately from the main dish.

The Dish: Delicious bites at Dawg House

You’d never know the dogs had been there. Owners Betty Lorenz and Evelyn Kamitomo spiffed up a former Gonzaga student rental house that once served as home to baseball team players for a new restaurant. The Dawg House Eatery, just off Hamilton and Sharp, sits just on the edge of the neighborhood and the business district.

Fresh Sheet: Sticky Fingers honored by Cooking Light

After more than 23 years, Sticky Fingers Bakeries is still walking off with awards. The Spokane-based company, probably known best for its scone mixes, is featured in the October edition of Cooking Light magazine. Editors gave Sticky Fingers’ Orange Curd a nod in its 2010 Taste Awards in the Best in Condiments category.

Local chefs inducted into honor society

The American Culinary Federation recently recognized three Spokane chefs for their work in the professional organization and the community. Chefs Raymond Delfino, Douglas Fisher and Robert Lombardi were inducted into the American Academy of Chefs, the honor society of the ACF, at a dinner last month in Anaheim, Calif., with 19 others from across the country.

North Side deli’s tamales get flavor from Hatch chiles

The folks at El Mercado del Pueblo are extending the Hatch chile season for a few more weeks. The Mexican grocery and deli at 1814 N. Division St. is offering tamales made with Hatch chilies and chicken, along with some Hatch chile salsa made from the peppers.

Poached pears elegant yet child friendly

The problem? An abundance of pears and no real desire to eat them raw. The solution? An easy dessert that took five minutes of my time and was both elegant enough to serve to company but child-friendly enough to prompt my 6-year-old to demand seconds. And to ask for it again for breakfast the next day. And lunch.

Washington wines hold their own in price and quality

These are challenging times for wineries, which are facing increased global competition and rapidly falling prices for their wines. California brands that once commanded $100 and more a bottle are now being dumped for $35 or $40. And at the most affordable level – $6 to $8 wines for everyday enjoyment – the corporate California wines have the advantage of cheap and abundant fruit.
