Many people mistakenly assume turkey burgers are lean. But depending on the variety of ground turkey used, you can end up with more than 15 grams of fat in a 4-ounce portion. You can buy ground turkey that is 99 percent lean, but you’ll end up with dry, flavorless burgers.

Local farmers markets growing

The summer sun has brought out a few more local farmers markets. At One World Café, 1804 E. Sprague Ave., PEACH Community Farm will be selling local, organic produce each Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. through the first week in October. Extra produce from the café’s garden also will be sold.

Fair deadline looms for food contestants

The deadline for entries into this year’s Spokane Interstate Fair is Aug. 10. There are three nationally sponsored contests at this year’s fair that offer money beyond the usual ribbons and prizes, including competitions with Ghirardelli chocolate, Fleischmann’s yeast and Karo corn syrup.
