Chance act of kindness puts face on those in need

Last winter, during a time when we had a lot of snowfall, I was driving downtown one afternoon and was stopped at the red light in front of a local tavern. As I waited for the light to change, an intoxicated man waddled out of the tavern, stood atop a large snowbank waiting to cross the street, slipped and fell face first onto the pavement, into the street. The light turned green, and the people in front of me proceeded to drive around him.

Jungle Pizza opening next Saturday

Ah, it’s Christmas week, so let’s have the theme be for kids. Food and features to keep children busy are the aim of Jungle Pizza, which is celebrating its grand opening next Saturday. Video games and entertainment, arcade games, air hockey, Skee-ball and candy machines with prizes awarded to winners help fill the 10,000-square-foot eatery at 503 E. Seltice Way. Previously the home of the Post Falls Auction Center, Jungle Pizza is next to the My Favorite Things store.

Snowflakes one of nature’s miracles

Records have been broken right and left with the snowfalls of the past two weeks. Cold-temperature records have also been broken, including an 18-below zero low temperature recorded at the Spokane airport last Saturday and a record low daytime high of 7 degrees in Coeur d’Alene that same day.

Swift winter punch

Even wonderlands have a downside. Across Kootenai County and the rest of the Inland Northwest, snow arrived later than usual this year. But once the snow started to fly, it made up for the delay in record-breaking fashion, leaving a wintry wake in its path that could be felt from the city and county road crews left to deal with the mess, to local charities struggling to help those in need.

Wallace Brewery pays homage to town’s colorful history

The city of Wallace has had its share of nicknames in its fascinating past. Most have been associated with the professions of mining and prostitution. Thanks to the new Wallace Brewing Co., these nicknames are being revived. Opening last week in the former Coeur d’Alene Hardware building at 610 Bank St., the brewery produces Rockhead hybrid lager, Jackleg Stout, Dirty Blonde Pale Ale and Red Light Wheat. A future product will be Orehouse Amber.
