Tournament chair Dave Odom also maps out pairings, with feedback from ESPN and consideration of the teams’ time zones. After those are released, participating coaches occasionally call Odom to offer their opinion, but the former South Carolina and Wake Forest coach rarely answers. But he did when Few dialed up Odom after Gonzaga’s draw was announced in late July – No. 2 Purdue on Monday, possibly No. 7 Tennessee on Tuesday and potentially No. 1 Kansas or No. 4 Marquette on Wednesday.

Tough opening act: Ivy League favorite Yale visits No. 11 Gonzaga on Friday

Gonzaga, Purdue set to clash again in first round matchup at Maui Invitational

Gonzaga will be quite familiar with its first-round opponent at the Maui Invitational. The same could be said for GU’s potential second and third matchups in the loaded eight-team field. The Zags will face Purdue, which returns all five starters, including national player of the year Zach Edey, from the team that crushed then-No. 6 Gonzaga 84-66 in the second round of the PK85 last November in Portland.
