Mariners get it right with lineup

SEATTLE – It was a curious lineup upon first glance. It was unique lineup upon further research. It was a winning lineup on Saturday. A pieced together, right-handed heavy Mariners lineup that was missing Robinson Cano and featured a No. 1 and No. 2 hitter whose combined age was over 72 years old somehow pulled out a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers at Safeco Field in front of 37,142 fans.

Tigers down Mariners 6-3

SEATTLE – Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera hit two-out homers off Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma, Detroit’s Justin Verlander made just one mistake on the mound in 7 2/3 strong innings, and the Tigers beat the Mariners 6-3 on Friday night. Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the third off Iwakuma (3-2) to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Martinez followed two innings later with a three-run shot on the 10th pitch of the at-bat and after Seattle intentionally walked Cabrera. It was the 13th homer of the season for Martinez, who had two hits to raise his A.L.-leading average to .347.

Weaver continues hot streak as Angels win 6-4

SEATTLE – Take away one frustrating inning for Roenis Elias, and he and the Mariners might have had a very different Tuesday night. But a three-run second inning torpedoed the start for the rookie left-hander and his teammates couldn’t mount a rally in a 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field.

Young, Cano do their thing

SEATTLE – Chris Young and Robinson Cano arrived in Seattle with fanfare at opposite ends of the spectrum. Seattle couldn’t celebrate the arrival of Cano enough. Young was a last-second addition plucked at the end of spring training. Each has proven invaluable in getting Seattle to .500 at the 50-game mark of the season.
