Cano, Hernandez and questions for Mariners

SEATTLE – Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn’t stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the A.L. West. Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle’s additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.

Chris Young impresses Mariners in 2-1 loss to Rockies

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Chris Young tossed shutout ball in his Seattle debut Saturday, providing a much-needed pitching boost for the Mariners as they closed spring training with a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies. With pitchers Hisashi Iwakuma, Taijuan Walker and Stephen Pryor all sidelined, the Mariners signed Young on Thursday after he was released by Washington. The 34-year-old right-hander allowed four hits, struck out two and issued no walks in 4 2/3 innings as he moves into a rotation spot.

Jerry Brewer: Mariners’ Lloyd McClendon worth a following

Lloyd McClendon wears a baseball cap as if it’s a responsibility, not an accessory. He tips the hat forward, barely on his head, shielding his eyes. You could knock it off just by walking briskly past him. The look mirrors McClendon’s casual charisma. Everything about the new Mariners manager seems comfortable, unforced, genuine, even if it’s a little different. He’s a leader without trying to be a leader. He has a strong voice without raising it. The Mariners have had a bushel of managers since their 1977 inception, but if you think this frightens McClendon, then you’re unaware of the audacity residing within this quiet man.

M’s set roster; Franklin demoted

PEORIA, Ariz. – Lloyd McClendon rubbed his hands over his head and exhaled. It was done. The decisions were made. He’d had the difficult conversations with players who had been cut. He had the pleasure of telling a few players they made the team. He got all that done before noon on Friday. The Mariners’ roster for opening day on Monday in Anaheim was officially set.

MLB notes: L.A. prevails Down Under

Opening day turned out to be a pretty g’day for the Los Angeles Dodgers and ace Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw flashed his Cy Young form, Scott Van Slyke homered and the N.L. West champions opened the Major League Baseball season with a 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Cano has 2 hits, Ramirez sharp as Mariners win

Second baseman Robinson Cano had two more hits and Erasmo Ramirez (pictured) pitched four-hit ball for six innings, enhancing his chance of earning a spot in the Mariners’ rotation and helping Seattle beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0. Ramirez, who has a 0.96 ERA this spring, struck out four without allowing a walk. He hit one batter. “I was lucky sometimes because I missed the spot,” Ramirez said. “We have to make better 0-2 and 1-2 pitches,” M’s manager Lloyd McClendon said. “He got some balls up in the zone that he got away with. But for the most part, he threw the ball OK.” McClendon stopped short of announcing that Ramirez has won a spot in the rotation. Cano was 2 for 3 to raise his batting average to .567. Dustin Ackley went 3 for 4, lifting his average to .457. Joe Beimel, Fernando Rodney and Yoervis Medina each pitched a scoreless inning for the Mariners. – AP

Mariners: Iwakuma cleared to resume training, M’s tie Padres

The Mariners got some good news today. Hisashi Iwakuma visited hand specialist Dr. Donald Sheridan this morning and was cleared to have the protective splint removed from his injured middle finger. He will still wear it during workouts for the next few days for protection and wear it at night when he sleeps. With the splint off, Iwakuma will do finger strengthening, movement and range of motion exercises since it was immobilized for five weeks.

Stefen Romero ‘in the mix’ with Mariners

PEORIA, Ariz. – When Stefen Romero was 5 years old, a little twist of fate steered him initially to baseball. “My mom was going to sign me up for flag football and we actually missed the deadline,” he said. “She said, ‘Well, baseball season is almost at the same time.’ So she signed me up for that instead.”
