Iwakuma excited – and relieved

HOUSTON – It may not have been the type of All-Star-caliber outing Hisashi Iwakuma delivered with such regularity last season, but his first outing of 2014 was better than many the Mariners have received so far this season. Iwakuma pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season. Not bad for a guy who wasn’t allowed to throw a baseball for the first six weeks of the season, endured a deliberately cautious recovery program and made only one rehab start before stepping on the mound Saturday.

Hisashi Iwakuma gave Seattle a quality outing in his first start of 2014 and his teammates rewarded his return with plenty of run support, scoring eight runs in the seventh inning and nine runs overall.

Roenis Elias leads Mariners past Yankees

NEW YORK – Manager Lloyd McClendon has often joked that Roenis Elias isn’t shy about being in the spotlight, in fact he kind of enjoys it – sometimes a little too much. Well, in the biggest city with the brightest lights, facing baseball’s pre-eminent team with all of its grandeur and tradition, the rookie lefty basked in that spotlight, pitching like he’d played in Yankee Stadium his whole life.

Robinson Cano helps M’s win in return to Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK – Robinson Cano had his fuzzy beard rubbed by Derek Jeter, got a huge grin from Mark Teixeira after a close play at first base and a whole bunch of hellos from his former teammates. The fans, though, were less welcoming. They gave Cano a true Bronx cheer in his return to Yankee Stadium.
