Mariners rookie picks up his first MLB shutout

SEATTLE – The baseball had been struck a few minutes prior by Victor Martinez and caught by Michael Saunders, and now here it was in the Mariners clubhouse, being handed to rookie left-hander Roenis Elias as a keepsake to remind him of the best performance of his young professional career. “Thank you,” said Elias, who defected from Cuba in 2010, then worked his way through the Mariners’ minor league system, then was inserted into Seattle’s starting rotation after spring training this season despite never pitching above the Double-A level.

Mariners get it right with lineup

SEATTLE – It was a curious lineup upon first glance. It was unique lineup upon further research. It was a winning lineup on Saturday. A pieced together, right-handed heavy Mariners lineup that was missing Robinson Cano and featured a No. 1 and No. 2 hitter whose combined age was over 72 years old somehow pulled out a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers at Safeco Field in front of 37,142 fans.

Tigers down Mariners 6-3

SEATTLE – Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera hit two-out homers off Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma, Detroit’s Justin Verlander made just one mistake on the mound in 7 2/3 strong innings, and the Tigers beat the Mariners 6-3 on Friday night. Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the third off Iwakuma (3-2) to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Martinez followed two innings later with a three-run shot on the 10th pitch of the at-bat and after Seattle intentionally walked Cabrera. It was the 13th homer of the season for Martinez, who had two hits to raise his A.L.-leading average to .347.

Erick Aybar hits 3-run homer to lead Angels to win over Mariners

SEATTLE — Erick Aybar hit a three-run homer, Matt Shoemaker pitched effectively into the sixth inning and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 7-5 on Thursday night. Recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday, Shoemaker (3-1) set down the side in order four times in 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits, equaled a career-high six strikeouts and did not walk a batter for the first time in five career starts.

Weaver continues hot streak as Angels win 6-4

SEATTLE – Take away one frustrating inning for Roenis Elias, and he and the Mariners might have had a very different Tuesday night. But a three-run second inning torpedoed the start for the rookie left-hander and his teammates couldn’t mount a rally in a 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field.
