Rookies spark Mariners’ win over Minnesota

SEATTLE – Nick Franklin and Brad Miller, two infielders who were toiling in Seattle’s minor league system a couple of months ago, are having a major impact on the big league club. Franklin homered twice, including a three-run shot, and Miller had two hits and scored two runs in a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Rookies lead Mariners past Twins

Nick Franklin homered twice, including a three-run shot, and Brad Miller had two hits and scored two runs in a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. “They spark us up the middle defensively,” Mariners acting manager Robby Thompson said. “They spark us at the top of the order. It’s not often you see a couple guys come up from Triple-A and hit 1-2 in the order in a short period of time. They’ve done a great job for us.” Chris Colabello hit a two-run homer for the Twins, but Endy Chavez robbed him of a second one to keep Seattle close in the early innings.

Twins blank Mariners behind Deduno

SEATTLE — Nothing came easily for Seattle Mariners starter Aaron Harang on Saturday. Even when he was holding the Minnesota Twins hitless over the first three innings, his pitch count kept steadily rising. By the time he finished the fifth, allowing one run on three hits, he’d already thrown 107 pitches. The Twins added a few more runs, including homers by Brian Dozier and Justin Morneau, and the Mariners couldn’t muster any in losing 4-0.

Dizzy spell sends Wedge to hospital

SEATTLE – Mariners manager Eric Wedge suffered a dizzy spell during batting practice, had to be helped into the dugout by team personnel and was taken to a hospital as a precaution before Monday night’s game against Cleveland. Wedge was helped off the field about halfway through the M’s hitting session and into the clubhouse. Wedge was feeling better after being checked out in the clubhouse, but the team still decided to have him examined at a hospital. Wedge is expected to return today. Bench coach Robby Thompson served as manager in Monday’s 2-1 win over Cleveland.

Mariners finish sweep of Astros

HOUSTON – The last time Felix Hernandez had a 7-0 lead, everything fell apart for Seattle’s ace. This time around things were much different. Nick Franklin hit his first career grand slam in Seattle’s big second inning to back up a scoreless start by Hernandez, and the Mariners rolled past the Houston Astros 12-5 on Sunday for their season-best sixth straight victory. Franklin’s slam, Seattle’s fifth this season, came off Jordan Lyles (4-4) in a seven-run second. Hernandez (11-4) scattered four hits with seven strikeouts over six innings to lower his A.L.-leading ERA to 2.43. He is 6-0 in his last 10 starts and hasn’t lost since May 25.
