Griffey’s hit wins it for M’s

Ken Griffey Jr. awakened the slumping Mariners with a game-winning, pinch-hit single to cap Seattle’s three-run rally off A.L. saves leader Kevin Gregg in the ninth with a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.

Mariners drop fifth straight

SEATTLE – Baby steps aren’t getting the Seattle Mariners any closer to turning around what matters most – their mounting string of losses. But at least the Mariners avoided the sting of a last at-bat defeat Wednesday night at Safeco Field. This time it was a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays that wasn’t decided until Mike Sweeney’s drive deep into the left-center field gap was run down by Toronto left fielder Fred Lewis for the final out of the game.

M’s stagger home

OAKLAND, Calif. – A road trip beset with internal strife and external struggles on the field ended in a grimly appropriate manner for the Seattle Mariners: a heartbreaking defeat. Kurt Suzuki’s two-out single in the 10th scored Cliff Pennington from third and gave the A’s a 6-5 victory, giving the Mariners six losses in eight games on this tumultuous trip as they dropped 11 games under .500 and 7 1/2 games out of first place.

Oakland A’s rough up Mariners’ starter

OAKLAND, Calif. – By most accounts, Ryan Rowland-Smith was pitching for his rotational life Monday against the Oakland A’s. If so, his demise came quickly. Rowland-Smith lasted just 22/3 incendiary innings as the A’s blasted the Mariners, 8-4, at the Oakland Coliseum.

Short bench hurts M’s

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.– In the aftermath of yet another one-run loss, Mike Sweeney shrugged off suggestions his lower back was too sore to play and insisted he was available when needed. But the taped-up medicinal patch on Sweeney’s back, visible as he pulled off his Mariners jersey in preparation for a post-game shower, was a clear indicator his manager may have been less than comfortable using him to pinch hit.

The question of Sweeney’s availability arose in the aftermath of this 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday when manager Don Wakamatsu allowed .200-hitting utility infielder Josh Wilson to bat with one on and one out in the ninth. Wilson popped out to first base. The rest was explained by the team’s woefully short bench as Seattle’s only healthy catcher, Josh Bard, called up from Triple-A earlier in the day, popped out foul to the opposing catcher to end the game.

M’s don’t waste power

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Doug Fister and Seattle’s bullpen were just good enough to make sure the Mariners didn’t waste another rare power surge. Franklin Gutierrez, Adam Moore and Mike Sweeney homered in support of Fister, helping the usually light-hitting Mariners beat the baseball-best Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Friday night.
