Man Arrested After Shooting Incident In Home

A 37-year-old Spokane Valley man was arrested Wednesday night for firing a handgun inside his home during an argument with his wife, sheriff's deputies said. Neil G. Patterson was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a charge of second-degree assault and on an unrelated outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

Wife Also Charged In Cruelty Case

The wife of a Spokane Valley man accused of nearly starving two horses to death on the couple's property now also faces cruelty charges. Lauren M. Williams, 33, was charged with two counts of second-degree animal cruelty last week. Cruelty charges were filed last month against her husband, Frank D. Williams, 38. Reports filed with the charges accuse the couple of not providing the horses with food, water or shelter. A veterinarian who examined the the 12-year-old gelding and 8-year-old mare said the gelding was so thin it was lucky to be alive.

Weary Travelers Fly Away, Make Most Of Cleared Passes

Clearing skies allowed travel conditions across the state to improve briefly Saturday before another storm was scheduled to hit. In Spokane, sunshine glistened off pavement beginning to show through on several main streets that have been white with snow for several days. Other parts of the state also reported partly cloudy skies.

Shooting Of Snowmobiler May Lead To Assault Charges

A Newman Lake man shot while snowmobiling on private property remained hospitalized Friday with a wound to his left calf. Dan Brammer, 36, was riding alone on a borrowed snowmobile in an area unfamiliar to him when a bullet pierced his leg Thursday afternoon, said Deputy David Reagan.

Woman Sentenced For Burning Home In Revenge For Eviction

A woman who admitted helping another man torch a Newman Lake home two years ago will spend four months in jail, a Superior Court Judge decided last week. Marilyn Edith McCallister, who originally was charged with first-degree arson, pled guilty to a lesser charge of attempted second-degree arson last Thursday. Judge Kenneth H. Kato ordered McCallister to report to the Spokane County Jail on Jan. 6 to begin serving her sentence.

Dog In Confinement At Shelter After Gash Ripped In Girl’s Face

A dog that tore a large gash in a 4-year-old Spokane Valley girl's cheek was declared a dangerous by animal control officials last week. Amanda Poulos and her brother, Sean, 10, were playing in the snow when the dog attacked the 38-pound girl, according to a report filed by animal control officer Jennifer Kline.

Horses Near Death In Cruelty Case

A Spokane Valley man was charged last Thursday with animal cruelty in what county animal control officials called one of the worst cases they have seen. Frank D. Williams, 38, was charged with second-degree animal cruelty for neglecting two horses. A report filed with the charges accuses Williams of not providing the horses with food, water or shelter.

Developer Drops One Plan, Raises New Controversy

A Spokane developer has scrapped plans to build dozens of houses near a semi-rural Greenacres neighborhood in favor of a 136-unit mobile home park, angering residents who also fought the original project. Members of the Micaview Landowners Association are worried the new proposal, which is scheduled for review by the county Planning Department beginning later this month, will squeeze them out of the decision-making process.

Law Officers, Volunteers Take On A Sobering Task

McQ's Billiard's general manager W. D. Hall was startled to see a county sheriff's deputy and state liquor control agent at the bar's front door Wednesday afternoon. Nearly all of his employees have already completed the training program the state will require beginning next year. McQ's employees also have worked diligently to keep from overserving customers and serving alcohol to minors, Hall said.

Commissioners Agree: Morningside Would Ruin Rural Flavor Of Micaview

Spokane County commissioners upheld an appeal filed by Micaview residents and reversed a zoning change for a 355-home subdivision planned for the south Valley. Members of the Micaview Landowners Association filed the appeal after the county hearing examiner approved developer Richard Dahm's request last spring to change zoning classifications to higher densities in the proposed 150-acre subdivision on a ridge east of Sullivan Road at about 16th Avenue.

County Commissioners Agree To Funding For Road Through Mirabeau Point

Money to build a road through a community center complex proposed for the Valley was approved Tuesday by Spokane County commissioners. The commissioners agreed to commit $1 million from real estate excise taxes to building Mirabeau Point Parkway, a road that would cut through the proposed 70-acre multi-use community complex. It would connect Euclid and Indiana avenues. In return, Mirabeau Point Inc., the non-profit group pushing the project planned for the former Walk in the Wild Zoo site, agreed to donate land for the road, a community park and a senior citizen center. The group must also form an association or other public body to maintain the park.

Firefighters Douse Nighttime Blaze At Apartments

No one was injured late Friday when fire caused the evacuation of a six-unit apartment building in the south Spokane Valley. A man visiting a friend in the neighborhood noticed flames coming from the third floor of an apartment building at 3015 S. Clinton about 11:30 p.m.

Officers Find Gun, Cocaine In Car Stopped For Speeding

Three men riding in a car that was stopped for speeding early Wednesday were arrested after law enforcement officers found 23 grams of cocaine, a loaded gun and thousands of dollars in cash. Julian Sicairos, 19, of Mabton, Wash., Juan Zamora-Meraz, 19 of Toppenish, Wash., and Armando Delgado-Ramirez, 18, were booked into the Spokane County Jail on drug charges.

Driver Beaten After Collision With Parked Car

Sheriff's deputies are investigating a felony assault after a 25-year-old man was beaten following a weekend traffic accident. Russell Taft suffered two large cuts to his face, several broken teeth and possible nose and jaw fractures during the beating, according to Spokane Valley Fire reports. The accident happened early Sunday in the 10900 block of east Mission Avenue. Taft was driving his car west on Mission about 4 a.m. and hit a parked car, said deputy David Reagan. When Taft sought help from a nearby home, he was attacked and beaten, possibly by the owner of the parked car, Reagan said. Deputies were unable to find Taft's attacker. Taft was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center where he was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.
