Spokane brother, sister accused of penny stock scam

A Spokane brother and sister are accused of participating in an expansive “pump-and-dump” penny stock scheme to defraud investors. A federal lawsuit listed Robin M. Rushing and David K. Rushing among 34 defendants whom the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission wants to recover money from and bar from working in the penny stock industry. The SEC said the group inflated stock prices for sham companies through the Costa Rica-based brokerage firm Moneyline Brokers.

Magnuson son sues siblings over estate

A son of the late Silver Valley mining magnate Harry Magnuson is suing three siblings for allegedly writing him out of their mother’s will and misusing money from the family’s trust account. Harry Magnuson died in 2009 at age 85, leaving behind a large fortune in mining companies, banks, hotels and shopping malls throughout the Inland Northwest. He’s often credited with revitalizing the town of Wallace, Idaho, and helping save Gonzaga University during financial struggles in the 1970s.

Three vie to represent Washington’s 9th District

Candidates hoping to represent southeastern Washington’s 9th Legislative District include an incumbent who was appointed just 10 weeks ago, a former sheriff of nearly three decades, and a 76-year-old Democrat with a background in construction. Rep. Mary Dye was appointed to the position in May for the final negotiations of this year’s marathon legislative session. She filled a vacancy left by Susan Fagan, who resigned a week earlier amid allegations of ethics violations.

Victim in Wednesday shooting identified

Spokane police released new details Wednesday about a fatal shooting that followed an apparent domestic dispute in East Central Spokane. William R. Poindexter, 45, was shot twice in the back and died at a hospital. Edward Bushnell, who police say intervened in a fight between Poindexter and his girlfriend, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a second-degree murder charge.

Chattaroy woman suspected in death of 5-year-old nephew

Investigators are not convinced that Gary Blanton III died because he hurt himself falling out of bed, as his aunt claimed on April 17. The 5-year-old boy, who became an orphan after both of his parents died, had been staying with his aunt in Chattaroy. According to court records, she was the only adult in the home when first responders arrived at 8 a.m. to find the boy unconscious with a severe head injury – later identified as a skull fracture – and numerous large bruises on his body.

89-year-old with Alzheimer’s missing

Spokane police officer arrested on armed burglary charge

A Spokane police officer was arrested by officers of his own department Tuesday night after he allegedly forced open the front door of his girlfriend’s house during an argument. Officer John Yen, 25, was arrested on a first-degree armed burglary charge at a home in the South Perry neighborhood, after police responded to a witness report shortly after 9 p.m.

University High teacher honored with Presidential Award

As a young boy in small-town Indiana, Michael Conklin drew a picture of his kindergarten classroom. On it, he scrawled in his neatest handwriting: “I want to be a teacher. He helps people learn.” Now 42, Conklin is living his childhood dream – and being recognized at the national level. The math teacher from Spokane Valley’s University High School recently won the 2015 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Roy Murry, Richard Aguirre plead not guilty

Roy Murry, who is accused of killing three family members at a home in Colbert, and Richard Aguirre, who was linked through DNA evidence to the 1986 murder of a Spokane prostitute, entered not-guilty pleas this morning in Spokane County Superior Court.
