Free medical clinic draws hundreds

Hundreds of people from across the Inland Northwest lined up for free medical, dental and eye care as the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center transformed into a working field hospital. And there’s plenty of room for more patients today from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. – the last day of the Spokane service event.

Spokane’s online bike registry pays first dividend

For the first time, Spokane’s online bicycle registry has been used to reunite a bike with its owner. An employee at Manito Park found a bike Monday and contacted the Spokane Police Department. The bike hadn’t been reported stolen, so police turned to SpokaneBikeID.org, which linked the bike to its owner, Cpl. Jordan Ferguson said.

Artists flock to Coeur d’Alene weekend art, food festivals

It’s hard to say where one festival ends and another begins. This weekend in downtown Coeur d’Alene, food, art and entertainment are everywhere. Artists and vendors have flocked to the Lake City from across the country to put their work on display at three festivals that started Friday and run through Sunday. They include the 47th annual Art on the Green, under the tall pines of North Idaho College; Taste of Coeur d’Alene, on the grassy knolls of City Park; and the city’s downtown Street Fair, on a stretch of Sherman Avenue as far east as Seventh Street.

Bicyclist hit by STA bus on Sunset Highway

A bicyclist was hit by an eastbound STA bus Friday morning in the 5600 block of West Sunset Highway. An ambulance took the bicyclist to Deaconess Hospital after the crash occurred around 7 a.m. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Woman saved her grandson’s life in crash

A split-second after she noticed an SUV careening toward her and her great-grandson, Marla Langley made the ultimate sacrifice, her children said. They believe that when a black Ford Explorer veered onto the sidewalk along North Ruby Street, Langley picked up 2-year-old Jamieson from his stroller and tossed him out of harm’s way.

Patrick N. McGhee now faces counts of second-degree murder, destruction of evidence, interstate trafficking in prostitution and procurement of a prostitute, all of which are felonies.

Spokane man arrested in Missoula after body found in SUV

A Spokane resident has been arrested in connection to the death of a 25-year-old man from Valley, Washington, whose body was found Sunday afternoon in an SUV parked outside a hospital in Missoula. Leo A. Rodriguez, 34, drove from Spokane to Missoula with Jake Colvin’s body in a Chevy Suburban, according to the Missoula Police Department. Officers responded around 12:20 p.m. Sunday to find the vehicle – facing the wrong direction, with lights on and keys in the ignition – in the parking lot of St. Patrick Hospital. Colvin’s body was in the passenger seat, and rigor mortis had set in, according to court documents reported by the Missoulian newspaper.

Woman pushing stroller struck, killed by SUV on Spokane sidewalk

Police suspect an intoxicated driver steered his SUV onto the sidewalk Tuesday morning along Ruby Street and struck a 68-year-old woman, killing her as she pushed a child in a stroller. A witness and paramedics administered CPR to Marla Langley, but she died at the scene near the busy street’s intersection with Augusta Avenue.

Grant County reports uptick in West Nile virus

At least 42 mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus this season in Grant County, an uptick from the 34 positive samples collected during last year’s mosquito season, according to the Grant County Health District.

Dog raises alarm during fire at Spokane Valley apartments

A puppy named Bonita is credited with alerting a Spokane Valley family to a fire early Monday that heavily damaged their apartment complex. Bonita started barking around 9 a.m. when a row of garages at the Broadway Square Apartments, 11910 E. Broadway Ave., caught fire. The racket alerted the dog’s owner, Tara Peters, who was at home with her 4-year-old son, Anthony.

Suspect in custody after Spokane police shooting

A Spokane police officer fired several shots at a Chinese restaurant burglar wielding a fake gun and missed Monday morning, leading to an alley fight off North Division Street where the officer was injured yet arrested the suspect. Cephas W. Parham, 39, is suspected of triggering a commercial burglary alarm at Peking North, 4120 N. Division. The officer, who has not been identified, arrived within four minutes and heard noise inside the building. He ushered out the owners, who had been preparing to open the restaurant, Spokane police Chief Frank Straub said during a news conference.

WSU hires UW team to assess public health issues

Washington State University has hired a group of researchers to assess health problems facing rural communities and local minority groups. At least six researchers are coming to WSU Spokane from the University of Washington’s Partnerships for Native Health program. The effort is aimed at mitigating unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking, poor diets and sleep patterns.
