WHL notes: Portland closes in on big record

Few people may remember the Estevan Bruins, but their name is likely to come up during the next week. The Portland Winterhawks have won 20 consecutive Western Hockey League games to close within two wins of the 1967-68 Bruins’ record for consecutive wins within a season.

Raiders use Chiefs to gain some ground

Shane Danyluk’s critique of his Prince Albert Raiders sounds similar to what coach Don Nachbaur could say about his Spokane Chiefs. “One of our biggest problems right now is consistency,” Danyluk said Wednesday after his two goals helped the Raiders knock off the Chiefs 4-1 in Western Hockey League play at the Arena. “We have to be ready to play, no matter who we’re playing, every night. When we play top teams, we seem to show up, so we have to bring that when we play lower-seeded teams.”

WHL notes: Every point crucial in East Division

Rockets cash in

The Kelowna Rockets have cleared about every hurdle this Western Hockey League season, but one important obstruction remained. Cole Linaker took care of that Wednesday night by scoring with 27 seconds left to give the Rockets a 2-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs at the Arena.

Rockets maintain top spot

The Kelowna Rockets arrive in Spokane tonight with one big goal all but unattainable but another well within reach. For much of the Western Hockey League season, Kelowna was on pace to tie or break the Victoria Cougars’ 1980-81 record for most wins (60) in a season.
