Spokane Indians baseball players have always been scrutinized by their major league parent clubs. This season’s Indians will be under the microscope more than any in history.
Senior Leah Heiner could have coasted home in fourth place and still handed the State 2B track and field title to Colfax. But that’s not how they do things in the town that won girls state titles all year.
Scout Cai soared over the bar by herself, but she counted it as another state title for Colfax. The sophomore topped her personal best by 1 foot Friday while winning the girls pole vault at the State 2B championships at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field.
Every member of University’s softball team looks forward to spending this weekend in Lacey, but Hannah Wesselman has an extra reason to embrace the road trip. Wesselman, U-Hi’s senior first baseman, will be playing in the city of her future college, Saint Martin’s University. Saints softball coach Rick Noren plans to be in attendance.
Angel Nkwonta acknowledges that it’s a bit bizarre to mix sprinting and the shot put. But the strategy seems to work well for the Pullman sophomore, who won two events and ran a leg on the winning 4x200 relay team Friday as the District 7 2A track and field meet wrapped up its two-day run at West Valley.
People tease Jordyn Soliday about having attended three high schools, but she laughs right back. “People are always like, ‘You’ve been to three high schools? What, you’re at what, and you haven’t even moved?’ But it’s me and it works, and I like where I am now. I’m glad I did it,” Soliday said.
There are more dynamic ways to earn a save, but Brittney Gately recorded the crucial outs that Shadle Park needed. Gately, who relieved Jaya Allen with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning, minimized the damage and overcame a shaky sixth Tuesday as the Highlanders (15-8) moved within one win of the State 3A tournament with a 10-9 victory over visiting Southridge (5-17) in 3A regional play.
McKensie Brittos watched the ball sailing toward right field and thought her poor start on the mound was about to get a lot worse. Instead, Lakeside right fielder Hailey Lesser tracked down the tailing-away ball, caught it over her shoulder, and held on for the third out despite falling down.
Carli Riordan’s outstanding four-year prep pitching career is winding down just as Jaya Allen’s is taking off. Central Valley’s Riordan and Shadle Park’s Allen played huge roles Thursday as their teams captured district championships at Whitworth University’s Marks Field.
East Valley is two wins away from its first state softball berth since 2003. Fifth-year Knights coach Ray Riggin is as surprised as anyone at the news. “If you would have asked me where we were going to finish at the beginning of the year, I would have agreed with everyone else – fifth or sixth,” Riggin said Tuesday, the day after EV (14-6) clinched the No. 2 berth to the District 7 2A tournament.
The State 2B softball tournament has been District 4’s playground for the past decade-plus. The last 11 championship games have featured 17 teams from the southwest portion of the state.
Zoe Clark struggled against her best friend until it counted the most. Clark, a senior center fielder, snapped a 4-all tie last Thursday with a two-out, RBI single in the seventh inning to give Coeur d’Alene a 5-4 win at Lake City to cap the Inland Empire League season.
Josh George finished second in a half marathon on Saturday in Indianapolis. He jumped on a plane Saturday night, flew to Spokane and won the men’s wheelchair race at Bloomsday on Sunday morning.
“Yesterday, we had really good conditions” in Indianapolis, George said. “We went really hard and almost got the course record. I definitely felt it today.”
Tyler Johnson needed a few days to decide if he wanted to give up one month of his summer break to travel to an old Soviet republic. In the end, of course he did.

In the end, of course he did.
Johnson, the Tampa Bay Lightning center by way of Central Valley High and the Spokane Chiefs, left today to join the U.S. men’s team at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in Minsk, Belarus.
