Spokane Indians off to best start in 77 years

It’s been a long time since the Spokane Indians featured fearsome hitters such as Jose Trevino and Luke Tendler at the third and fourth spots in their batting order. It’s been longer still since a Spokane professional baseball team had such a torrid start to the season – 77 years, to be exact.

Spokane tops Eugene again to go to 4-0

Before this Northwest League season began, Marcus Greene was momentarily stumped on the question, “What was your biggest highlight last season?” Greene has an early favorite for his 2014 highlight – his two-run homer in the fourth inning Monday night that led the Spokane Indians to their fourth consecutive win to start the season.

Indians beat Emeralds, improve to 3-0

Zach Cone doesn’t figure to be around to witness how this Spokane Indians team pans out, but he likes what he’s seen in his short return to Avista Stadium. “This is a special group,” Cone said after his solo home run in the sixth inning Sunday afternoon helped the Indians improve to 3-0 this Northwest League season with a 5-2 win over the Eugene Emeralds. “Just hanging with them the last three days, you can tell they’re in it for the right reasons.”

Luke Tendler and Alberto Triunfel collected the key hits Saturday night, but their gloves drew as much praise as their bats. Triunfel’s double staked Spokane to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and Tendler added a solo home run in the third as the Indians started the Northwest League season 2-0 for the first time since 2009 with a 5-3 win over Eugene.

Eduard Pinto joined the Spokane Indians for 22 games last season, finishing with two RBIs in 80 at-bats. Pinto surpassed that total Friday night with one swing, a three-run double in the second inning that guided the Indians to a 7-3 victory over the Eugene Emeralds to open the Northwest League season at Avista Stadium. Pinto added an RBI single during a three-run fourth, finishing 3 for 5 in the leadoff spot.

Spokane Indians set to open season at home against Eugene

Relief pitcher Luis Pollorena joined the Spokane Indians early last August, just as the team was gearing up to challenge for the Northwest League’s North Division second-half title. Spokane Indians ready to start 2014 season

Tim Hulett, Marcus Greene and Saquan Johnson have experienced the first day of Spokane Indians minicamp before. Indians manager Hulett would happily repeat the process for several years, but he’d be just as happy if Greene and Johnson found themselves in another place next June.
