Cold-Shooting Colville Settles For 6th At State

Colville missed a chance at No. 3 by missing 3 after 3 after 3. The Indians failed on 25 of 33 3-point attempts Saturday and fell to Lynden 63-55 in the game to determine third and sixth places at the boys State AA basketball tournament in the Tacoma Dome. Colville (18-10) came within two of the tourney record for attempted 3-pointers.

Cheney, Colville Move On Frontier League Boys Teams Advance To State Semifinals

All of the discussions between August Parker and Denny Humphrey appear to have paid off. Parker played enforcer Thursday in Cheney's 70-52 win over Ephrata in a boys State AA basketball tournament quarterfinal. Over the years, Blackhawks coach Humphrey has agonized about Parker's inconsistency. Few who watched Parker for two days at the Tacoma Dome would consider him anything but consistent. With 16 points and 11 rebounds Thursday, Parker has 33 points and 30 rebounds in two wins. "He's on me a lot of times," Parker admitted about Humphrey. "But I know what's right a lot of times, and he knows what's right, too. He's a great coach." Humphrey has Cheney (18-8) back in the semifinals for the first time since 1991. The unranked Blackhawks will meet third-ranked Lynden (24-2) at 7 tonight, with the winner going to Saturday's title game. Cheney's Frontier League neighbor Colville advanced to the semis by beating Jackson of Mill Creek 51-50 in overtime of a game the Indians led 39-21 with 2:49 left in the third quarter. Colville, guaranteed of its first state trophy, will take a shot at top-ranked O'Dea (27-0) at 8:30 tonight. Just one team (Seattle Prep) has come within 10 points of O'Dea this year. Cheney 70, Ephrata 52 Ephrata (19-8) had no answer for Cheney's combination of outside shooting and inside power. Tucker Urdahl, Pat Stiffler and Ryan Waller combined for eight 3-pointers after hitting six on Wednesday. Pullman ('90) and Spokane's West Valley ('94) hold the tourney record of 29. Point guard Stiffler had just one turnover in more than 26 minutes.

West Valley Figures Out New Route To Semifinals Eagles Girls Choose Long Road Over Free Way; Bump Stanwood

Nobody here figured West Valley would qualify for the semifinals. Yet the Eagles are definitely in their first semi, because nobody here can figure them. Gabby McClintock scored 19 points, Dawn Salfer had nine rebounds, and reserves played key roles Thursday to lead 10th-ranked WV (20-4) past Stanwood 53-39 in the girls State AA basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome. WV set a tourney record Wednesday by making 32 free throws. The Eagles went a different route Thursday, hitting eight 3-pointers, one shy of Hazen's 1991 record. The Eagles play top-ranked Meadowdale (24-2) at 7 tonight for a title-game berth. Meadowdale has beaten Stanwood three times this year, but never by as much as WV. "Our goal was we wanted to be playing Saturday," said coach Mark Kuipers, whose Eagles are guaranteed a trophy of sixth place or better. "I told our girls before the game that the shortcut to playing Saturday was by winning tonight." The Frontier League lost its other representative when Katie Borton drove the middle uncontested for a basket with 37 seconds left in Yakima West Valley's 43-40 loser-out win over Cheney. The Blackhawks have lost six consecutive games at state since 1995. West Valley 53, Stanwood 39 Sixth-ranked Stanwood (20-6) led 10-3, and was headed to the line for two shots it would make, when Eagles coach Mark Kuipers called timeout. "I thought they were being soft and lethargic," Kuipers said. "But they don't panic because they're an older team." WV clicked off five 3-pointers in the first 8:45, then turned to its old friend, the free throw, to take charge. The Eagles scored the last 10 points of the half, all at the line, to lead 31-23. Reserve Cindy Simpson hit the final three from the foul line after being hacked on a last-second heave. The Spartans made a final push in the third quarter and closed to within three points before WV reserve Sherry Shollenberger hit a 3-pointer and free throw for a 41-34 advantage. "She comes out and goes for the instant spark," Kuipers said. "She's in one mode, the shooter's mode." WV shot just 28 percent from the field, but hit 15 of 25 free throws to give it 47 of 72 for two days. WV's steady McClintock had eight rebounds and was 6 of 9 at the line. "I don't think people here expected us to do so well," McClintock said. "We didn't know what to expect, either, but it's our year (with four senior starters) to do everything we can while we're here." WV (Yakima) 43, Cheney 40 Cheney (20-4) shot 11 percent from the field in the first half, but started warming up after Kara Weitman drilled a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer. Weitman, 1 for 20 for the tourney until then, hit two more 3-pointers in the third quarter to spur a 16-0 run that helped the Blackhawks build a 27-20 lead. Teammate Anna Getz, 0 for 13 in the first half, added six points during the spree, but then went silent for 12 minutes while fighting leg cramps. Getz, who came in averaging 20.9 points per game, finished just 2 of 22 from the field. The Rams (13-10) took a 31-29 lead late in the third quarter with a 9-0 burst, then exchanged leads with Cheney four times. Two Getz free throws with 1:34 left gave Cheney its last lead at 40-39, and the Blackhawks turned the ball over 30 seconds later. WV coach Cheryl Holden called for a play on which Borton has hesitated all season. But this time, Borton drove the lane for an uncontested layup.

Frontier League Boys Go 2-0 In Aa State Openers Cheney, Colville Move On In State Play In Tacoma Dome

The latest edition of the State AA basketball tournament program includes a mention of the record-setting 1996 Cheney Blackhawks under the headings: least points scored and lowest average. Those injury-depleted Blackhawks exited the Tacoma Dome with 71 points (35.5 average) in two losses, which perhaps didn't prepare fans for Cheney's 68-56 win Wednesday over undisciplined Cleveland in an opener at the '97 boys tourney.

Seattle Metro Provides Opponents For Fl Boys

Colville and Cheney's boys should encounter a wide spectrum of what the Metro League has to offer. Blanchet (14-11), Colville's opponent Wednesday to open the State AA Tournament, draws praise for working hard and overachieving. The Braves' top player, 6-foot-2 senior forward Charlie Wellnitz (15 points per game), is most known for his football prowess. Everybody else averages between 7-9 points for the Seattle school.

Scouting Could Pay Off For Cheney Blackhawks’ Jessett Familiar With First-Round Opponent

After locking up a third consecutive State AA basketball tournament berth Friday, Cheney's girls coach Marty Jessett pondered his scouting options for Saturday. Jessett chose the game within easiest driving distance, Prosser against West Valley (Yakima). Lo and behold, Jessett didn't waste his time driving to the Yakima Valley. District 7 champion Cheney (20-2) landed Prosser (22-3) during Sunday's draw at Bellevue for the 16-team state tourney, which begins Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome. The game is scheduled at 8 p.m. Prosser, last year's seventh-place state finisher, was ranked No. 1 earlier this year in the Associated Press poll. The Mustangs are now ranked fourth, one behind Cheney. "They're only six deep, so that's their weakness," Jessett offered as his scouting evaluation. "But they're fundamentally a sound team." The rest of Cheney's bracket appears favorable, with just two other ranked teams. Defending champion Blanchet, 16-7 this year and ranked seventh, plays eighth-ranked Monroe (19-4) at 5 Wednesday night. Cheney wouldn't meet either until the semifinals. West Valley's girls, seventh at the '88 tourney, are making their second trip to state. The Eagles appear to have an easier opener than Cheney, with Franklin Pierce (17-5) at 10:30 a.m. But waiting in the wings will be either second-ranked Mount Si (23-2) or No. 6 Stanwood (19-5). WV coach Mark Kuipers made the trip to the draw. He and Cheney representatives ended up sitting at the same table as Franklin Pierce's people. Nonetheless, Kuipers knows nothing more about FP other than their No. 1 district status. Top-ranked Meadowdale (22-2) plays Aberdeen (16-6) at 1:30 in a '96 opening-day rematch won by Aberdeen. In the boys tourney, also at the Tacoma Dome, District 7 champ Colville (16-6) will hook up with Blanchet (14-11) at 8, when fellow district champ Cheney is playing on the girls court. Blanchet, unranked all year, drew attention by beating Seattle Prep at district. Seattle Prep is the lone team to stay within 10 points of top-ranked O'Dea this year. "We have (defending champ) Gig Harbor and O'Dea on our side (of the bracket), but you have to play all of the good teams at state," said Colville coach Bill Pilgeram. Pilgeram took the Indians to their first state appearance in 1995. This group has a more balanced attack, Pilgeram said. Cheney's boys (16-8) are headed to state for the second consecutive year and 10th time overall. The Blackhawks drew three-time finalist Cleveland (15-10) and will meet at 1:30 p.m., the time the Blackhawks drew for their '96 opener. "Any time you mention Metro League, a person gets nervous about it," said Cheney coach Denny Humphrey, 475-227 in his career.

B’S Get Dose Of R & R Republic Grabs Boys Title

The team of destiny had one surprise too many for the team of history. Republic walked its final tightrope at the 55th boys State B basketball tournament Saturday, throwing aside a paltry first half to beat seemingly invincible Reardan 38-36 in the championship game at the Arena. Republic entered the game with three narrow wins at state, including a last-second win in their opener against Tacoma Baptist and Friday's thrilling semifinal with Darrington. Reardan had strolled to three wins by an average of 24.7 points.
