U-Hi Still Alive On Comeback Drive

GSL boys Long after the game, Jay Humphrey was trying to figure out exactly how his University Titans won. The Titans escaped with a crucial 40-39 victory over Lewis and Clark at the Arena Tuesday night. "We're still alive," Humphrey said. "We got some breaks in that game but we'll take it. We've had our share of bad breaks. These kids deserve something good happening to them."

Schuh Helps Hush Indians

GSL boys Whenever Central Valley needed a big basket, Corby Schuh delivered. The Central Valley senior pumped in 27 points, hitting 5 of 9 3-pointers, to lead the Bears to a 53-45 win at North Central in a crucial Greater Spokane League boys basketball game Tuesday night. In the first half, Schuh kept CV in the game with a couple clutch 3's.

Ferris Beats Mead Thanks To Switch

GSL boys The change was small, but it made a huge difference for the third-ranked Ferris Saxons. With just a minor defensive adjustment, Ferris ended Mead's nine-game winning streak 64-44 and broke the tie atop the Greater Spokane League boys basketball standings. The game was part of eight games played on two courts before 2,740 spectators at the Arena Tuesday night.

Team-Roping Headliner Suffers Fruitless Evening

Team roping may be like riding a bicycle, in theory. In reality, though, sometimes you crash. That happened to Mike Beers Saturday night before 7,477 fans attending the Wrangler Prorodeo Classic at the Arena, but he wasn't around long enough to feel bad about it. The Powell Butte, Ore., cowboy, one of the best ropers in the country, came up empty after partner Mike Fuller of Clarkston got a quick head catch on their steer.

Rodeo Dives Into Arena Hooves First Corey, Beers Headline Event Running Tonight Through Sunday

On paper, this weekend's rodeo should be the best in the four years of Spokane's Wrangler Prorodeo Classic, and not just because the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association event is moving into the new Arena. Among cowboys entered in the three-day event, which begins tonight at 8 p.m. are former world champions Clint Corey and Mike Beers, plus several National Finals Rodeo veterans. But usually, it isn't until a few hours, and sometimes a few minutes, before a performance that some cowboys "turn out," because they have to be somewhere else. A huge rodeo has just begun in Fort Worth, Texas, and the finals of another big indoor show in Denver are Sunday. Because there is more money to be won at the big shows, Spokane will rarely get many big names and even the ones who enter may not make it because they have made the finals of a more lucrative event. But until then, it's worth knowing that Corey, 1991 bareback champion from Kennewick and an 11-time NFR qualifier, is scheduled to ride tonight. Beers, from Powell Butte, Ore., will be the top attraction on Saturday's 8 p.m. show. He and Dee Pickett won the 1984 team roping championship. Beers, who has been to the NFR 13 times, is scheduled for team roping, with Mike Fuller of Clarkston, and calf roping. Fuller and Beers teamed to win the Columbia River Circuit finals rodeo a couple of weeks ago, giving Fuller the 1995 season title. Beers, who won the Columbia River calf roping crown, also was the circuit's allaround champion. The PRCA Columbia River Prorodeo Circuit includes Washington, Oregon and North Idaho. Cowboys who compete mostly in Columbia River rodeos and don't travel nationally make up the bulk of the almost 250 entries in the Spokane rodeo. They will compete for more than $25,000 in prize money. The rodeo concludes with a 2:30 performance Sunday afternoon. Enough advance tickets have been sold to virtually assure attendance records. More than 15,000 attended the rodeo in 1993 and the single-performance best was 5,245. There are almost twice as many seats in the Arena, and plenty of good seats will be available at the door. Only two cowboys have won money at the three previous rodeos. Mike Hammer of Pasco won the bareback title the first two years and was second last year. Tom Camarillo of Hermiston, Ore., won the all-around the first year and has earned money here in team roping, calf roping and steer wrestling. Among the cowboys scheduled to compete tonight are Rod Lyman of Lolo, Mont., who almost won the world steer wrestling title in 1994; steer wrestler Brad Gleason of Ennis., Mont., a five-time NFR qualifier; and Skeeter Thurston, of Nanton, Alberta, a six-time NFR qualifier in saddle bronc riding.

Rogers’ Win Gives Worthy Intro To Midseason Honors

The Rogers girls basketball team deserves more than congratulations for its win Tuesday night over Gonzaga Prep. The Pirates' victory, only their second over Prep in the 20 years of the Greater Spokane League, returned the spotlight to the reason games are played rather than why they shouldn't be. Prior to the Rogers upset, the hottest topic of conversation in the GSL was the Central Valley girls' 113-22 win over North Central two weeks ago.

Mead Subdues Central Valley, 56-46

GSL girls Mead and Central Valley traded blows - maybe turnovers, fouls, bricks and great plays is more accurate - for 27 minutes, but it was the remaining 5 minutes that made the difference. Mead's third-ranked Panthers controlled No. 7 CV for the first 5 minutes of the second half to get the needed cushion in fashioning a 56-46 victory in a Greater Spokane League girls basketball game at the Arena Friday night. "I thought in the second half we got in a little better sync," Mead coach Jeanne Helfer said. "Defensively, we played really good the first 4 minutes out and controlled the boards. Everything starts for us on defense."

Bushinski’s Move Purely Academic

Linda Bushinski was surprised by the telephone call, surprised any comment was wanted or needed after word got out that she had resigned as the North Central High School volleyball coach. Although Greater Spokane League teams win State AAA volleyball titles with regularity - NC was the fourth straight state champion from the GSL not every coach walks away while still on top.

Mead Handles Prep, Stays Tied For Lead

GSL boys Perspective has a lot to do with analysis, but the bottom line is Mead stayed tied for the Greater Spokane League boys basketball lead with a surprisingly easy 77-59 win over Gonzaga Prep Tuesday at Mead. "We shot well," Panthers coach Jim Preston said, "but we shot a lot of good shots because we made the extra pass." Gonzaga Prep coach Mike Haugen offered a different spin: "Defensively, you can determine how comfortable an offense gets, and we didn't make it that hard on them to score."

G-Prep Wins Latest Ot Duel With Cv

GSL boys Picking up where they left off last year, Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley went into overtime to decide a Greater Spokane League boys basketball game. Picking up where the football season left off, it took a lastsecond tackle for Prep to escape with a 55-54 win at the Arena Friday night. The Bullpups were ahead by one point when Joe McFarland missed two foul shots with 5.3 seconds left. The Bears rebounded and Josh Nesbitt took a breakaway pass, heading for a layup when Prep's Paul Sweeny stumbled into him from behind, both crashing to the floor with 0.1 seconds left - and traveling was called.

Eagles’ Coach May Miss Frontier Opener

West Valley is likely to open the Frontier League boys basketball season tonight without coach Joe Feist. Feist faced an automatic one-game suspension after being ejected from the Eagles' last game, the championship of the WV tournament against Gonzaga Prep last Friday. WV point guard David Schillinger and sixth man Ty Gregorak also faced suspensions for "taunting" technical fouls and ejections in the G-Prep game, but were cleared Thursday night to play tonight pending appeals. The Eagles, who have unsuccessfully lobbied the Frontier League principals, hope to have District 7 representatives hear their case today.

Part Of 1-2 Punch, Clark Delivers Ko

GSL girls Chelsea Clark knows if she delivers the baskets her Mead teammates will continue to deliver the ball. Clark spent the holiday break reminding herself of that by playing pickup games against the guys and Wednesday night she delivered the knockout punch against Shadle Park. The Panthers used the one-two, outside-inside combination of Stacy Clinesmith and Clark to hand the Highlanders their first Greater Spokane League loss, 69-42 at Shadle Park.

Ferris Executes To Perfection And Defeats Cv

GSL girls basketball The Ferris plan was simple, take care of the basketball. The Saxons did and took care of Central Valley's perfect start to the Greater Spokane League girls basketball season. Using 6-foot-1 Jennifer Swinton as more of a decoy than a threat, the Saxons were careful with the ball and their shots in rolling to a 51-40 victory at Ferris Thursday night. "Our big goal was to take care of the basketball," Ferris coach Janet Skaife said. "Jayme (Morrisette), Amy (George) and Jennifer did a good job breaking the press. We were patient. I thought we controlled the tempo."

Ferris Shines In Fourth Quarter, Beats CV 67-43

GSL boys basketball The Ferris Saxons used a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter to break open a close game en route to a 67-43 win over the Central Valley Bears Thursday night at Ferris. Scott Stocum scored a game-high 19 points for Ferris (3-0, 7-0), while Craig Henneberry and Leonard Harmon added 15 points and 11 points, respectively. Ryan Smith scored seven points to lead Central Valley (2-2, 4-3).

Windstorm Creates Havoc For West Teams

The windstorm that blasted through Washington last week was especially devastating on the other side of the state. All athletic games were postponed because schools were released early in anticipation of the storm, which had wind gusts of up to 105 mph and left thousands without power. Some makeup games have been pushed back as far as Jan. 8. One league has designated a makeup date of Feb. 10 if the schools cannot agree to get together earlier.
