Wiaa Delays Announcing New Locale For State 2as Tournaments Could Be In Spokane, But First Proposal From Arena Said Too High

Just before the State 2A high school basketball tournaments were to be moved into the Spokane Arena, the WIAA called a time out. Mike Colbrese, executive director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, canceled a Wednesday press conference in which it was expected he would announce the 2A tournaments for the 1999-2000 season would be held in Spokane. Because the Arena's proposal to hold the 2A tournaments was significantly more expensive than the State B, the WIAA Executive Board instructed Colbrese to check other options, he said Monday.

Plan Targets Shot-Clock Disparity

While high schools in Washington bend over backwards to treat male and female athletic teams equally, not everything is equal. Some schools are trying to erase one of the discrepancies by proposing a change in shot clocks for basketball. Two proposals before the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, offered by Great Northern League schools, could take care of that.

Ferris Girls Can’t Block Out Sehome, Take Home Eighth Place

The legs gave out before the hearts. Too many games battling too many bigger players took its toll on Ferris. The Saxons were destroyed on the boards and ultimately on the scoreboard, falling 58-37 to Sehome Saturday afternoon in the Kingdome in the State 4A girls basketball tournament.

Double Fun, Double Duty For Students

Ferris is getting a double dose of fun with its girls and boys teams in the State 4A basketball tournaments, but the double duty is cutting into the good times. "The games are tough, but we're so happy to be here," senior cheerleader Brenda Klein said. "It would be more fun if we we had the whole day to shop."

After having to scratch and claw just to get an invitation to the Big Dance, Greater Spokane League coaches can't be real thrilled with the way their partners look for the first song. The three GSL teams headed to the State 4A basketball tournament combined for 61 wins - and play teams with better records in Wednesday's first round at the Kingdome.
