Bullpups run away with win

If Greater Spokane League boys basketball teams didn’t know about Gonzaga Prep junior shooting guard Parker Kelly before Tuesday, they do now. Kelly was deadly from long range, making 7 of 8 3-point shots. The combination of his shooting and the usual contribution from Ryan Nicholas inside spelled doom for University as the Bullpups ran away from the visiting Titans 81-53 in a league opener.

Vikings prevail

The Coeur d’Alene girls basketball team didn’t take its first lead until overtime Saturday. Mead’s quickness caused the Vikings problems, but Coeur d’Alene played with more patience in the second half before overcoming the visiting Panthers 52-51 in overtime in a non-league game.

CdA has wrestling promise

It’s been 14 years since a North Idaho 5A school captured a state wrestling championship. The drought could end this year. “If all the stars align, Coeur d’Alene not only wins but they run away with it,” Lewiston coach Dan Maurer said.

Saxons can’t keep pace

TACOMA – The balance was absolutely paralyzing. Ferris football coach Jim Sharkey’s worst fear was realized as his Saxons couldn’t contain Skyline’s multiple weapons.

Pups’ center of attention

Coeur d’Alene boys basketball coach Kent Leiss has seen several talented post players in his 21 years as a head coach. None is better than 6-foot-7, 235-pound Ryan Nicholas of Gonzaga Prep.

Saxons look both ways

Ferris senior running back Gage Orosco and junior wide receiver Jordan Tonani have piled up impressive statistics the past four games. Redmon driven to get Mead to state

A case can be made that Mead senior Jazmine Redmon is the best athlete in the region, if not the state. Consider the most recent entries on Redmon’s resume. She was the Greater Spokane League’s most valuable player in basketball last year; she ran a leg on the Panthers’ 1,600-meter relay that captured a second state title last spring; and she was named the GSL’s defensive MVP in the just-completed soccer season.

Traditional powers will play at last

The two best girls basketball programs in the area the past four years face off Friday night when Coeur d’Alene visits Lewis and Clark at 7:15. They aren’t the same teams that have combined for five state championships in that span. But they’re not far removed.

Area teams make nice home in 4A

Years ago when the 4A classification was formed, I knew there was an area school that would find its new home cozy. Sure enough, Sandpoint hasn’t disappointed. And this fall was no different. The Sandpoint boys and girls soccer teams captured state championships – again – and the football (second) and volleyball (third) teams brought home trophies as well.

5A and 4A Inland Empire League football coaches announced all-league teams recently. Coeur d’Alene junior running back Zach Keiser was named the 5A IEL offensive most valuable player. Lake City junior linebacker Brian Griswold was named defensive MVP.

Saxons unleash running game in win

YAKIMA – Finesse and physical aren’t generally terms one would use in the same sentence to describe the Ferris football team. When situations dictated as much Saturday afternoon, though, Ferris turned to a dimension of its game it had kept under wraps most of the season.

Rally falls short

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Sandpoint football team chose an inopportune time to misfire on both sides of the ball. Blackfoot built a 29-9 lead before the Broncos held off a late Sandpoint rally to win 29-23 in the State 4A championship game before an estimated crowd of 2,500 at the Kibbie Dome.

Sandpoint loses in title game

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Sandpoint football team chose an inopportune time to misfire on both sides of the ball. Blackfoot built a 29-9 lead before the Broncos held off a late Sandpoint rally 29-23 in the State 4A championship game before an estimated crowd of 2,500 at the Kibbie Dome. Sandpoint (9-3) took over at its 16-yard line with 4:16 remaining after Blackfoot (11-1) botched a 21-yard field goal attempt that would have all but locked up the game. Blackfoot’s place holder couldn’t pull down a high snap, allowing Sandpoint to take over at the 16. Bulldogs quarterback Daniel Charvoz completed five passes on the drive as Sandpoint moved to the Blackfoot 32. But a sack for a 6-yard loss followed by three consecutive incomplete passes ended the Bulldogs’ final possession.
