Experienced Tigers ready

Jim Redmon hopes state experience means something. The Lewis and Clark girls basketball coach is taking a team to state for an eighth straight year. The Tigers have captured trophies five consecutive seasons, including consecutive titles from 2006-08.

Seniors on a mission

The way the Freeman girls basketball team sees it, two points kept it from capturing the State 1A championship last year. The Scotties were undefeated when they faced off with Seattle Christian in the semifinals, but Freeman fell on the short end of a 43-42 decision. Seattle Christian downed Granger 55-53 in the title game and the Scotties took third.

4A girls field looks familiar

Mead girls basketball coach Regan Drew knew that attending the State 4A tournament draw in Renton would be nothing more than watching an exercise in formality. After all, the top two teams from the state’s four regions are automatically seeded into specific spots on the 16-team bracket. What the draw comes down to essentially is random placing of four teams.

Freeman girls pleased with 2B tournament draw

When the Freeman girls basketball team’s name was drawn for the 1A state tournament bracket, coach Ashlee Taylor was more than pleased. “We have a good game for us,” said Taylor, whose Scotties (22-1) take on Zillah at 7:30 p.m. when the tournament begins Wednesday at the SunDome in Yakima.

KENNEWICK – How about a fifth time, a true rubber match, in Tacoma – say next Saturday night? The Gonzaga Bullpups evened the season series at 2-2 with the Mead Panthers and captured the 4A regional boys championship Saturday, 67-63 at the Toyota Center.

KENNEWICK – The last time the Mead girls basketball team captured a 4A regional championship, coach Regan Drew was a Panthers sophomore. Mead went on to claim a state title. The year was 1992.

Mead girls’ feat results in awards

The Mead High volleyball team pulled off an improbable comeback to capture the State 4A championship last fall. On Wednesday, Mead reaped honors for its feat at the 32nd annual Youth Awards Luncheon at the Spokane Convention Center. Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters tabbed senior outside hitter Alexis Olgard as Junior Female Athlete of the Year, Panthers coach Judy Kight as Junior Female Coach of the Year and Mead as the Junior Female Team of the Year.

Vikings, Trojans will vie for State 5A title

There’s a distinct possibility that North Idaho 5A wrestling teams could finish first and second at the state tournament this weekend. No. 1 ranked most of the season, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings are favored to capture their first state championship when the 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A state tournaments begin Friday and conclude Saturday at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena.
