Shadle Park boys survive 3A opener

TACOMA – When is a 32-point lead barely enough? Case in point was the Shadle Park boys basketball team’s State 3A tournament opener Wednesday. The Highlanders were cruising along late in the third quarter, leading 59-27. In a matter of 9 minutes, that lead had dwindled to six.

Shadle Park girls hold on in opener

TACOMA – It was a matter of survival for the Shadle Park girls basketball team Wednesday. Playing without leading scorer Aleisha Hathaway, who had to sit out a game after being ejected late in the regional championship game, the Highlanders found a way to pull out a 47-46 decision over the Capital Cougars in a State 3A tournament opener at the Tacoma Dome.

Carlon the inspiration for Eagles girls

The West Valley girls basketball team wants to win a state championship for its coach, a retired farmer from Whitman County. Lorin Carlon, a twice-wounded Vietnam veteran who turned 64 years old last month, is in his sixth season as Eagles head coach. He’s taking West Valley to state for a third straight year.

The Shadle Park Highlanders boys basketball team’s four seniors are doing something no other seniors have done in school history. They’re making a third straight trip to state. Seniors Robby Douglas, Taylor Pettersen, Jake Rogers and Scott Anderson start along with sophomore Brett Boese.

The Greater Spokane League sent two boys and two girls basketball teams to the State 4A tournaments. The season isn’t over for the GSL just yet. The conference will send two more boys and girls teams to Tacoma when the 3A state tournaments begin Wednesday.

State title eludes Panthers

TACOMA – The No. 1-ranked Auburn Riverside girls basketball team had to go to overtime before it could preserve its perfect season. The Ravens built a six-point lead that the Mead Panthers couldn’t overcome as Auburn Riverside prevailed 56-52 in the State 4A championship game Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.
