Bears get boost

Cory Mack couldn’t get the win on the mound. But the Central Valley senior will gladly settle for being in the right spot in the end. With the bases loaded and facing a 0-2 count, Mack was hit by a pitch as the Bears pulled out a dramatic 6-5 over the Ferris Saxons in 11 innings in a District 8 4A baseball championship game Friday at Avista Stadium.

U-Hi takes district softball

Surely part of the reason the sun was shining Friday afternoon at Whitworth’s Marks Field had to be from the reflection of Jessica Moon’s smile. The University junior put the punctuation mark on an early-season slump that led to some time on the bench by going 3 for 4 as the Titans edged the Mead Panthers 3-2 in the District 8 4A championship softball game.

Torrid Vikings qualify for state baseball

The Coeur d’Alene Vikings’ bats have heated up at just the right time. State-bound Coeur d’Alene piled up 12 hits, including seven extra-base swats, as the Vikings handled the Lake City Timberwolves 13-1 Thursday in a run-ruled shortened 5A Region I loser-out baseball game at Ted Page Field.

Hard work leads Mead Panthers’ Schrader to triple crown

There’s no magical answer as to why Jake Schrader boosted his batting average by more than 200 points this spring. There’s nothing romantic about a kid saying he’s spent much of his free time the past year working out and taking as many swings as possible.

Notebook: East Valley Knights expect success

There’s no question that East Valley softball coach Ray Riggin believes he has one of the top teams in the region – regardless of the fact that the Knights finished tied for eighth at 7-13 in the Greater Spokane League. “We had every team beat at some point during the season,” Riggin said.

Regional basketball tournaments’ demise will hurt GSL

A tradition that began here in 1988 will come to an end next year. The 4A and 3A boys and girls basketball regional tournaments between the Greater Spokane League and the Columbia Basin Big Nine League are going the way of the dinosaur.

Panthers ride defense to district championship

Mead’s Jake Gilbertson knew that if he could get enough air under a pass to Jordan Etten, it would be enough to free up his teammate for a shot. Sure enough, Gilbertson lifted a pass near the 50-yard line and led Etten just enough as he settled the ball in time to chip a shot from 15 yards out that cleared the arms of oncoming Ferris goalie Nick Stebbins and bounded into an unguarded goal with just under 13 minutes left in the first half.

Bears tie Mt. Spokane for GSL crown

Judging by their reaction, one would have thought the Central Valley Bears had clinched the Greater Spokane League baseball championship outright Thursday. Preseason favorite CV knocked off Mt. Spokane for a second straight game as the visiting Bears forged a tie for the league title with the Wildcats with a 6-2 decision.

Daniel Hammersley gives CV Bears solid options

Bet you can’t name the best pitcher, statistically speaking, in the Greater Spokane League the past two years. Central Valley senior right-hander Daniel Hammersley isn’t a household name. Nor is he the ace of the Bears staff. In fact, he’s not even second best in terms of his spot in the rotation.

Prep notebook: Mead Panthers aim for perfection

The Mead boys and girls track teams can complete perfect regular seasons this afternoon when they host Mt. Spokane, East Valley and Lewis and Clark in a Greater Spokane League finale. The meet begins at 4. LC and Mt. Spokane boys and girls could challenge the Panthers’ quest.

Kirui wins first try at Bloomsday

Peter Kirui had a simple strategy Sunday morning for the 34th Lilac Bloomsday Run: Follow the lead truck. The 22-year-old Kenyan, running the 12-kilometer course sight unseen, pulled away from a pack of nine countrymen after the 5-mile mark to win in 34 minutes, 28 seconds under sunny but crisp conditions.

Greg Lee: Colbrese encouraged by reaction

Mike Colbrese, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association executive director, reads high school sports blogs statewide. It affords him another avenue in which to measure what people are saying and thinking about prep sports. He wasted no time checking out blogs after the WIAA Executive Board announced last Friday a significant restructuring of the state boys and girls basketball tournaments.
