Athletes weathered mean spring

I hope the North Idaho 3A, 2A and 1A track athletes who had to suffer through the most miserable weather this spring last Saturday have dried and thawed out by now. At least the Post Falls softball team didn’t have to play in a downpour in the 5A state championship game at Twin Falls. All the Trojans had to deal with was some hail, snow and steady wind gusts of more than 30 mph.

Saxons in position, thanks to hard work

Skill is definitely a required element in the game of soccer. There’s another intangible, though, that can be equally important – good fortune. Or in a word, luck.

State softball: Pitching name of Colville’s game

Colville has been a regular qualifier for the State 2A softball tournament. The Indians, though, have never placed higher than third. First-year coach and Colville alum Mandy Sumner believes it is time for that to change.

Ferris looks forward to state

To suggest that the Ferris Saxons have gotten this far in the season purely because of luck would be grossly unfair. However, the Saxons know they’ve also had their share of good fortune.

Tigers place 2nd

BOISE – In what some of the longtime tournament officials called the worst weather in history, the State 3A, 2A and 1A track meets concluded under wintry conditions that would have caused any regular-season meet to be canceled. Still, despite the weather, the Timberlake boys and girls both finished runner-up Saturday in 3A at Boise State University’s Bronco Stadium.

Trojans cruise to crown

TWIN FALLS, Idaho – Post Falls softball coach Jack Foster always thought if he could get a team to the state tournament, it would fare well. The difficult part was getting out of the intensely competitive Inland Empire League.

Team effort

BOISE – It’s easy to look at all the big-point producers and figure those athletes played the biggest role in a team earning a state track trophy. First-year Coeur d’Alene coach Linda Lanker certainly had plenty of praise for those who stood highest on the trophy podium for the Vikings boys on Friday. But she also had to point out all scorers as CdA captured second, its first state trophy since 1984.

Trojans’ Rebecca Bauman goes out in style

BOISE – Post Falls senior Rebecca Bauman finally captured the state championship that had eluded her. A qualifier in the discus and shot put all four years, Bauman wrapped a nice bow on her final state appearance Thursday by taking gold in the discus and taking second in the shot during the first day of the State 5A meet at Boise State University’s Bronco Stadium.

Coeur d’Alene Vikings yearn for baseball title

It’s a year later and Coeur d’Alene baseball coach Nick Rook still maintains his team should have won its State 5A tournament opener. Rook’s Vikings rolled into Boise last spring and promptly fell to eventual state champ Capital 6-4. A couple of mistakes cost CdA a win, Rook said.

Tigers defeat Lions

The late-season surge by the Lewis and Clark baseball team continued Tuesday. Dakota Dubois, Lewis and Clark’s No. 8 batter, hit a grand slam and right-handed pitcher Dean Neilson survived a season-high 10 walks as the Tigers handled the Kennewick Lions 9-1 in a 4A regional play-in game at Hart Field.

Tigers qualify for regional play-in

The Lewis and Clark Tigers baseball team went down this road a year ago. The Tigers just hope the journey doesn’t meet a dead end Tuesday like it did last spring.
