Simon stands tall on mound for CV

Just call him the Skinny Unit. At some point, 6-foot-8, 208-pound Scott Simon, who wears a size-16 shoe, figures he’ll start to fill out. He’s just not sure when. He thinks he’s still growing.

Trowbridge lifts U-Hi

It appeared David Borgman had rallied the Central Valley baseball team to victory when he completed a 4-for-4 day with his fourth homer of the season in the top of the seventh. With the Bears trailing 4-3, Borgman lifted a two-run homer to right-center.

Bears improve to 9-0

In weather only sled dog racers would appreciate, the Central Valley Bears overcame bone-chilling wind gusts of more than 40 mph Thursday afternoon to hold off two-time Greater Spokane League baseball champ University. Cory Mack’s single drove in what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning as the unbeaten Bears stopped the visiting Titans 7-6.

Layup in OT lifts Purdue over Texas A&M

Purdue nips Aggies in OT

Purdue, A&M styles similar

So what will the Purdue University men’s basketball team use as motivation in the NCAA tournament now? After the fourth-seeded Boilermakers were picked as the most likely first-round upset – based largely on the season-ending knee injury to junior forward Robbie Hummel seven games ago and their 69-42 loss to Minnesota in the Big Ten tournament semifinals – Purdue (28-5) used the perceived slight to stop Siena 72-64 on Friday in a South Region opener.

‘D’ decides it

Name a team sport and it’s evident that good things generally occur when defense takes center stage. It was certainly the case Friday afternoon when Purdue University’s defensive intensity, especially in a 6½-minute stretch to open the second half, turned the momentum as the Boilermakers stopped Siena 72-64 in an NCAA men’s basketball tournament South Regional opener before 10,895 at the Arena.

North Idaho teams stellar at winter sports

It can’t be overstated how impressive it was that Priest River captured boys and girls state basketball championships in the same year. Priest River did something no other 3A school has done. Overall, the girls/boys double has been pulled off just six other times since the state activities association started governing state girls basketball tourneys in 1976 – twice in 5A, once in 4A and three times in 2A.

Hathaway returns, lifts Shadle

TACOMA – Aleisha Hathaway was so anxious to return, the adrenaline overtook her at times Thursday evening at the Tacoma Dome. Hathaway ended up playing just two quarters because of foul trouble, but she matched her season scoring average (14 points) and provided more than enough impetus as the Shadle Park Highlanders girls basketball team stopped the Seattle Prep Panthers 49-37 at the State 3A tournament in a game that started two hours behind schedule.

Steady Highlanders reach semis

TACOMA – A year after being humbled in a 0-2 showing at the boys State 3A basketball tournament, the Shadle Park Highlanders are a win away from playing for the state championship. To get there, though, the Highlanders must beat No. 1-ranked and undefeated Enumclaw (26-0).
