Bezdicek ties for medalist honors

Spokane’s Sierra Bezdicek tied for medalist honors with a one-over 73 at the American Junior Golf qualifier tournament at Wenatchee Golf and Country Club. Bezdicek along with a handful of other Spokane area golfers will play in the AJGA tournament that begins a three-day run today.

Roseburg Docs beat Kelso to complete sweep through regional

After fighting for its postseason life the previous two weeks, the Roseburg (Ore.) American Legion baseball team is headed to the World Series. The Oregon state champ completed an undefeated swing through the Northwest Regionals, topping Washington state champ, Kelso Pacific Tech, 6-3 in the championship game Monday at Gonzaga University’s Washington Trust Field.

After fighting for its postseason life the previous two weeks, the Roseburg (Ore.) American Legion baseball team is headed to the World Series. The Oregon state champ completed an undefeated swing through the Northwest Regionals, topping Washington state champ, Kelso Pacific Tech, 6-3 in the championship game Monday at Gonzaga University’s Washington Trust Field. The Roseburg Docs (33-13) will stay in Spokane to take the short trip east to Avista Stadium on Friday where they will play Central Plains Region 6 champ Eden Prairie (Minn.) at about 8 p.m. in the final of four openers.

It was just what the doctor ordered for the Roseburg (Ore.) Docs. The Oregon state champ erupted for 10 runs in the final two innings to pull away from the Boise Gems 16-5 in the quarterfinals of the Northwest Regional American Legion baseball tournament Friday at Gonzaga University.

Single in 7th lifts Wyoming champs over Blue Devils

Crisp, fundamental baseball it wasn’t in the nightcap of the Northwest Regional American Legion tournament. Wyoming state champ Cheyenne Post 6 found a way to outlast the Spokane Blue Devils, 5-4, as the first day ended late on a sticky Thursday evening at Gonzaga University’s Washington Trust Field before an estimated crowd of 600.

Stars Blue claim second MSNM title

The Spokane Stars Blue Elite girls basketball team completed their season with another championship. The Stars went 6-0 at the MSNM Western Nationals in San Diego last week. They defeated Las Vegas Elite (74-23), Arizona Venom (63-53), Way to Win Gold of Seattle 46-31, Utah Swish (42-32), Orange County National Elite 47-31 and Arizona Warriors 52-43 in the title game.

It’s been 34 years since an American Legion baseball team from Spokane has played in the State AAA championship game. Appleway Chevrolet knocked off longtime Legion power Yakima and was the lone unbeaten team in the 1975 state tournament. But Yakima came back to beat Appleway twice, thanks largely to 27 walks in two games. Yakima went on to win the World Series.

The second generation of Owens has arrived in Greater Spokane League wrestling. Tommy Owen, a three-time state champion and state runner-up at University, has been named head coach at Central Valley. He replaces Doug Pecha, who was dismissed after one season.

Donna Lenseigne, who turned the Gonzaga Prep girls tennis program into a powerhouse, passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday. She was 51. Lenseigne died of organ failure, G-Prep activities coordinator Paul Manfred said.

Mead’s Rogers wins two wrestling titles

Jordan Rogers continued his national-level success on the wrestling mat at the Cadet Freestyle and Greco Roman nationals in Fargo, N.D., recently. Rogers, who will be a junior this fall at Mead, captured freestyle and Greco national championships. He went undefeated in both disciplines in the 171-pound class.

Stars claim Seattle tourney title

The Spokane Stars Elite girls basketball team won a tournament and placed second in another in recent weekends. The Stars captured the championship at the MSMN national tournament in Seattle July 10-13 while finishing runner-up in the End of the Trail tournament in Oregon City, Ore., July 6-9.

Wood Bat Classic draws record field

A record number of teams will participate in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene Senior and Junior Wood Bat Classic baseball tournaments Friday through Monday. A field of 27 teams will be in the Senior tournament and 40 teams will be in the Junior tournament.
