Strong second half lifts Central Valley past Lewis and Clark

It wasn’t flashy, but it was as efficient as it could get for the Central Valley football team Friday. The Bears committed no turnovers and took advantage of two from Lewis and Clark as Central Valley stymied the Tigers 21-3 in a Greater Spokane League 4A opener at Albi Stadium.

Prep notebook: Road-weary G-Prep football enters GSL play 2-0

The Gonzaga Prep football team has yet to play a home game – and it won’t until October – but the Bullpups are glad to be back in Spokane nonetheless. The Bullpups survived slow starts at Richland and Bellarmine Prep and are 2-0 heading into Greater Spokane League 4A openers Friday.

Pick 6: Playing from way behind

I like where I stand after two weeks. I’m cautious, though. Last year I had a four-game leading going into October and ended up losing the season battle. So while I like my 10-2 start, you won’t see me celebrating. Sam, on the other hand, is off to a pedestrian 6-6 beginning.

Justin Janke leads North Central’s boys to Tracy Walters title

North Central boys cross country coach Jon Knight cautioned his top runner to be patient Saturday. Knight didn’t want senior Justin Janke busting out from the starting line and do all the heavy lifting for the talented field in the annual Tracy Walters Invitational.

University holds off Post Falls in defensive battle

A big play by University to start the game and a big play by Post Falls to open the second half accounted for two of the game’s three touchdowns Friday. In between, the teams piled up big defensive play after big defensive play before U-Hi used a touchdown in the fourth quarter to hold off the Trojans 14-7 in a nonleague game at Roos Field in Cheney.

Panthers roll over Southridge 39-7

The good news for the Mead football team is it is off to a 2-0 start. There should be some caution, though, about the fast beginning under first-year coach Benji Sonnichsen.

Pick 6: Pullman at Freeman a tough call

It wasn’t a perfect start, but considering the alternative – Sam Adams’ start – I’ll take it. I went 5-1 while Adams, SWX’s sports director, went 3-3.

CdA overcomes CV 37-30

It’s as improbable a win by a Coeur d’Alene football team in some time. Visiting Coeur d’Alene scored two touchdowns in the final 4 minutes, 28 seconds to knock off the Central Valley Bears 37-30 in a nonleague game.

Football openers on standby as Spokane Public Schools await word from teacher’s union

City high schools had yet to hear by Wednesday evening whether they had the go-ahead to play season-opening football games Friday – strike or no strike. Greater Spokane League secretary Herb Rotchford on Tuesday asked Spokane Public Schools officials and Spokane Education Association members for direction regarding football games this weekend. Rotchford said opposing teams traveling to Spokane and even parents traveling to away games had the right to know if they were playing or not.

GSL 3A; Mt. Spokane the team to beat

The quality of play in the GSL 3A isn’t likely to be as deep as in 4A. The easy pick to win is Mt. Spokane, a team that’s been there and done that. And Rogers has the inside track to qualify for the postseason for the first time in school history. Here’s a look around the league:

GSL openers feature four games against IEL

It’s a strange season- opening weekend for GSL football teams. Seven of 10 teams are out of town. Stranger yet, there’s just two games at Albi Stadium on separate days.

Intermountain League: Timberlake Tigers still the team to chase

If anyone is synonymous with Intermountain League football championships it’s Timberlake coach Roy Albertson. Entering his 13th season after “retiring” from a similar position at Chewelah, Albertson has directed Timberlake to 10 league titles, including the last six, and 12 straight trips to the playoffs.

The rubber match season is upon us. The Scribe (Greg Lee) won the first Pick 6 season and the Talking Head (Sam Adams) broke through last year. So by season’s end, somebody will have bragging rights.
