Vikings stripped of regional victory

The Coeur d’Alene baseball team isn’t headed to state – at least not yet and not by the shortest route. Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday had to forfeit its 4-2 5A Region I tournament championship victory over Lewiston on Tuesday after it was discovered the Vikings violated a pitching rule.

The Central Valley girls track team met its equal Saturday at the Strandberg Relays. Featuring quantity and quality, three-time defending State 3A champion Kamiakin posted 175 points to capture the event at CV on a gorgeous afternoon.

CV girls roll at Mooberry Relays; NC boys foursome honored

Appropriately, a team that bases its success on depth, won going away Saturday at the 52nd annual Mooberry Relays at Rogers High School. The Central Valley girls, behind wins in the distance medley, the 4x800 relay and the 1,600 relay, piled up 120 points, winning by 31 points over runner-up Mead.

Madison Hovren is having quite the time on the girls basketball all-star game circuit. The Central Valley senior was named most valuable player as Washington hammered Oregon in the Northwest Shootout game at Hillsboro, Oregon, last Saturday.

Prep track notes: Logan Feasline broke through at Pasco Invite

Logan Feasline wasn’t so much stunned as he was satisfied. The St. Maries senior fouled his first two throws in the discus at the Pasco Invite last Saturday. Hoping to land his final throw between the boundaries in the prelims so he could continue on to the finals, Feasline heaved the platter 174 feet, 2 inches – a season best and 14 inches shy of his overall best.

GSL track and field: Mead’s boys defeat Mt. Spokane

Because the Mead and Mt Spokane boys track teams suffered curious season-opening losses just before spring break, there was a heightened since of urgency going into their friendly grudge match Thursday. The visiting Panthers, believing they were double-digit underdogs to defending Greater Spokane League champion Mt. Spokane, upset the Wildcats 75.66-69.33.

Kaitlyn Gunnerson is running for times this spring. The Coeur d’Alene senior naturally wants to defend her state championship in the 100-meter hurdles and capture a title in the 300 that she narrowly missed in a photo finish that required officials to spend 10 minutes deciding a winner.

True to who Bishop Sankey is, the first thing he purchased after signing a rookie contract with the Tennessee Titans wasn’t anything for himself. The former Gonzaga Prep standout, a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, bought his mother furniture.

Mt. Spokane hires David Wagenblast to coach boys basketball

David Wagenblast celebrated his 40th birthday Tuesday. A few days earlier he received an early present when he was named Mt. Spokane’s boys basketball coach. “I wanted to take what I considered to be a good job,” said Wagenblast, a nine-year assistant coach at Shadle Park. “This is a school that pretty quickly can become a basketball school. They won the GSL title in football and they’re always good in baseball. You know the athletes are there. I’m excited to get started because of that.”

Mead football coach Carty fired

After a three-month investigation by school district officials, Mead football coach Sean Carty was told Friday he was fired. “His contract has not been renewed for next year,” Jared Hoadley, the district’s executive director for student services, athletics and activities, said Monday.

Maryland women reach Spokane Regional final

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half, Laurin Mincy scored all 15 of her points in the first half, and top-seeded Maryland advanced to the Spokane Regional final with a 65-55 victory over No. 4 seed Duke on Saturday.
