Lee: Dale Poffenroth piles up wins without counting

Let’s address a rumor about Dale Poffenroth right away. Some have whispered this winter that the only reason the Coeur d’Alene girls basketball coach came back for an 11th season was to chase a 600th career victory.

Mead’s Sue Winger blends athletics, academics

Nothing demonstrates how selfless Mead basketball standout Sue Winger is than Senior Night. Winger, who had started every game since the second one her freshman year, knew Panthers coach Quantae Anderson would be in a pickle with six seniors. Traditionally, coaches try to start their seniors on Senior Night, but only five can start.

Trojans make adjustments, top T-Wolves

After playing one of its poorest opening halves of the season, the Post Falls boys basketball team made two simple adjustments. The Trojans wanted more spacing to allow their guards to penetrate Lake City’s zone defense. And when the guards couldn’t get to the rim because of the Timberwolves’ size, they kicked it out to open teammates.

Central Valley edges University in a nail biter

Once Eli Emerson exorcised the doubt from between his ears, he enjoyed sweet redemption. After missing two free throws in an overtime loss earlier in the week, Emerson made both ends of a one-and-one with six seconds to go as the Central Valley Bears clawed past the University Titans 48-45 in a Greater Spokane League boys basketball game Thursday before 5,381 at the Arena.

GSL girls should see tighter games in second half

The entertaining showdown last week between the Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley girls basketball teams is a classic example why Greater Spokane League teams fare well at state. Most years in the past two decades, GSL teams face some of the stiffest competition in the state right in their own back yard.

Rogers’ Hampton makes Bears pay

Melik Hampton didn’t know it was coming, but it didn’t surprise him either. His Rogers basketball team had the ball coming out of a Central Valley timeout with the score knotted 58-58 with 19.5 seconds to go in overtime Tuesday. The Bears let almost seven seconds elapse before Max Sykes purposely fouled Hampton, who entered the game shooting 51 percent from the free-throw line.

Lee: Rogers boys lead surprises in GSL basketball

Greater Spokane League boys and girls basketball teams reached the halfway mark last Friday, and there’s no question which team has knocked my socks off so far. I’m not talking about the defending State 4A champion Gonzaga Prep girls, who have seemingly picked up where they left off last March.

Otiona Gildon works to leave her legacy at Gonzaga Prep

You could hear it in Kelly Graves’ voice. The former Gonzaga women’s basketball coach, in his first year in a major rebuilding project at Oregon, can’t wait for the arrival of Gonzaga Prep standout Otiona Gildon next year.

Post Falls uses 4-point play to beat CdA

For seven of the Post Falls boys basketball players, the ultra-competitive environment they found for their 5A Inland Empire League opener Tuesday was brand new to them. At times it showed. In the end, though, one of the veterans came through with precious seconds ticking off the clock.

CdA edges Lake City in IEL opener

The Coeur d’Alene and Lake City boys basketball teams each had countless opportunities to wrest control in their 5A Inland Empire League opener Thursday. In the end, the Vikings’ steadier hands and better defense when things got tight were just enough, as Coeur d’Alene held off the visiting Timberwolves 50-49 in overtime.

Hunter King keys Mead wrestling win over Central Valley

Mead wrestling coach Phil McLean called the move Hunter King pulled off late “big danger, big payoff.” Leading 4-3 with 30 seconds remaining against Central Valley’s Bridger Beard, the 132-pound King countered a single leg shot with a mutlock move.

Tate Orndorff, U-Hi’s defending state champ, will follow in father’s footsteps to OSU

Sometimes the youngest in a herd of sizeable siblings turns out to be the best athlete. University senior Tate Orndorff has the big-bone build of his father, Dave, who was a two-sport standout in football and wrestling like his son. After two years at a junior college and a two-year mission with the LDS church, dad went on to be an All-American in wrestling, placing second in the NCAA tournament at heavyweight his senior year at Oregon State University.

Mead considered favorite in GSL gymnastics

It remains to be seen if the Mead gymnastics team can contend for a state championship, as it did when it captured the 4A title in 2012. Panthers coach Laurie Chadwick is optimistic, though.

Tri-State draws elite field for 43rd edition

It’s billed as having more quality than a state tournament. The 43rd annual Tri-State wrestling tournament won’t be any different. It’s chock full of state champions and eventual state champions. In fact, there will be competitors who don’t win at Tri-State who will capture a title in their own state.
