4A/3A Cross Country: North Central, Tanner Anderson win another

PASCO – History will show that the North Central boys cross country team captured a record-tying ninth straight State 3A championship Saturday. The complete story it won’t tell, though, is how difficult the challenge was not only for the Indians but for defending individual champ Tanner Anderson.

Lake City claims overtime victory

Three times Capital had the football inside the 1-yard line in overtime, including no more than 2 inches from the goal line on fourth down, and Lake City’s defense held. The Timberwolves watched a 34-24 lead dissolve in the final minute, but Lake City pulled out a 41-34 victory in the State 5A quarterfinal Friday night.

Quarterback Michael Goggin just what the Lake City Timberwolves needed

Lake City quarterback Michael Goggin has broken three regular-season passing records and has a chance to break overall season marks if the Timberwolves play deep into the postseason. Goggin said it’s easy to point out why he’s had such an impact in his first year as the starter. Look around, he said.

Greg Lee’s football follow: GSL’s best set for play-in games with MCC

Thanks to a big assist from University, a mini playoff wasn’t needed to decide the Greater Spokane League’s second 4A play-in seed for next week. Lewis and Clark’s 10-0 win over Mead on Friday coupled with the Titans’ victory over Central Valley later that night vaulted the Tigers into the postseason. The Tigers’ last-minute win over Ferris earlier was the head-to-head tiebreaker for the second seed.

Pulliam leads Mt. Spokane to GSL 3A championship

The Mt. Spokane football team didn’t mind seeing a trend continue Friday – as long as another habit continued, too. The Wildcats had a slow start, falling behind by two touchdowns, but they threw a second-half shutout to knock off the Shadle Park Highlanders 28-21 in the Greater Spokane League 3A championship game at Albi Stadium.

Cross country: Viking girls favored to win 3rd straight

They’ve run all season without their top runner from 2013, but the Coeur d’Alene girls cross country team has fared just fine. The Vikings are favored to capture a third consecutive State 5A championship Saturday when the state meets are held at Eagle Island State Park near Boise.

Volleyball: Young Viks take their state shot

The Coeur d’Alene volleyball team heads to state without a senior on its team. That’s a little misleading, though. After the just completed regular season, the Vikings’ underclassmen are a year older in experience.

Sandpoint girls defeat Bishop Kelly for State 4A soccer championship

Sometimes to be a goalie you have to have the nerves of a daredevil. Just ask Sandpoint goalie Paige DuMars. With Sandpoint nursing a 1-0 lead with 3 minutes, 29 seconds remaining, DuMars found herself on the backend of a 3-on-1 – the one, of course, being her and a net behind her.

G-Prep uses defense, special teams to beat LC

It was appropriate that the Gonzaga Prep-Lewis and Clark football game had a playoff feel Friday. The Bullpups rode their defense and eked out just enough offense in the end to hold off the Tigers 17-7 in a Greater Spokane League 4A game at Albi Stadium.

Sandpoint girls returning to title game

Peaking. Webster’s Dictionary wouldn’t necessarily define peaking as how the Sandpoint girls soccer team is playing at the moment, but it should. The Bulldogs played themselves into the 4A State championship game for a second straight year after posting a second shutout in two days Friday.

Deep, unselfish Lake City boys open state with high hopes

Many are the reasons Chad Beadell likes his Lake City boys soccer team. The least of those reasons is the Timberwolves take an unblemished record to state. It’s really just a by-product of all the good things Beadell appreciates about his boys.

North Central wins GSL cross-country crown

The long-awaited showdown between two of the top runners in the nation was put on hold again Wednesday. North Central, the eight-time defending State 3A boys champion, lined up without defending individual state champ Tanner Anderson with the Greater Spokane League championship up for grabs.

Greg Lee: Phenomenal Lake City-Coeur d’Alene game set ups Idaho postseason push

The Lake City/Coeur d’Alene football game lived up to the hype and quite possibly exceeded it. I’ve watched nearly 500 football games the last three decades. That’s a conservative estimate. The game I watched Friday was arguably the best I’ve seen. Not so much because of execution – there were plenty of mistakes because, heck, it’s high school sports – but because of pure drama and entertainment.

Lake City picks off defending state champ Coeur d’Alene

They call it Maverick: Lake City defensive backs are taught to jump a route whenever they see the quarterback’s eyes. That’s what Timberwolves junior Scott Helsper did, intercepting Coeur d’Alene quarterback Austin Lee on the first possession in overtime.

Shadle Park rolls by Rogers

If there was any lingering disappointment from the week before it wasn’t evident with the Shadle Park football team Thursday. The Highlanders came out in businesslike fashion, rolling up a 41-0 lead before settling for a 41-14 win over the Rogers Pirates in a Greater Spokane League 3A opener at Albi Stadium.

Lake City girls soccer blanks CdA for 5A region title

The seniors on the Lake City girls soccer team have some unfinished work. Two years ago, seven of the team’s eight seniors were instrumental in the Timberwolves’ state championship. Last year, though, Lake City fell in a state opener to eventual winner Boise.

Idaho soccer: Timberwolves crush Trojans for title

Lake City boys soccer coach Chad Beadell said he didn’t sleep well Monday night. The Timberwolves obviously didn’t pick up on their coach’s nervousness as Lake City scored early and often to put away the Post Falls Trojans 8-0 in the 5A Region I championship game Tuesday at LC.
