Wood Bat Classic begins Thursday

The annual Spokane/Coeur d’Alene 4th of July Legion Wood Bat Classic tournaments begin Thursday at 15 venues in the region. There are 28 teams in the senior division and 50 in the junior and U-16 divisions.

Hockey legends to play at Coeur d’Alene’s Frontier Ice Arena

Spokane’s own Tyler Johnson heads to Las Vegas on Sunday where he will find out Tuesday if he’s the NHL rookie of the year. Before heading to Vegas, though, the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Johnson stopped by Coeur d’Alene to help promote a kid-friendly exhibition that will bring professional hockey to the Lake City as part of a fundraiser for youth hockey.

Kent Leiss has a new lease on his coaching career. Leiss, who resigned as the Coeur d’Alene head boys basketball coach with four games left in the season two winters ago, will take over as boys coach at Sandpoint.

Sara Chalich sparks Region to second straight win

In one of the more competitive, if not one of the better played Jack Blair Memorial girls basketball games, one of the shortest players on a court full of NCAA Division I players provided the difference. Coeur d’Alene’s 5-foot-6 guard Sara Chalich, who is headed to NAIA Carroll College, made five 3-pointers to lead Region to a second straight victory in the series, 93-92, Tuesday at University High School.

LC hands boys job to Redmon

Longtime Lewis and Clark girls basketball coach Jim Redmon has resigned to accept another coaching position. He’s staying in the Greater Spokane League. In fact, he’s staying at Lewis and Clark. After interviewing Friday, Redmon has accepted the head boys basketball position.

Small schools, big roles

Every year, the Jack Blair Memorial girls basketball game features players with resumes chock full of athletic and academic feats. Spokane Stars director Ron Adams founded the game for two reasons: First, it was to honor the late Central Valley girls coach he had worked with, and two, it was to showcase the richness of girls talent in the area.

TACOMA – For four years, Mariah Cunningham of Central Valley worked for a state championship. She played on a State 4A runner-up basketball team. She was close last year in track.

TACOMA – They were as stunned as their victory was stunning. About 5 minutes after pulling a major upset in the State 3A girls 800-meter relay, the Mt. Spokane foursome of Ashlee Pedersen, Cheyenne Konrad, Katie Nilsson and Ciara Bland had yet to learn they had won.

TACOMA – Turns out rest did the trick for Elisha Allred after all. Missing the last month of the season after aggravating an elbow injury, the East Valley senior decided to stop throwing the javelin in hopes the tender joint would heal.

TACOMA – New classification, the biggest classification, a 2-foot improvement year over year and second in the State 4A pole vault. When cast in that light, Braden Barranco of Mead couldn’t help but smile.

At an early-season North Central girls track team practice, Sabrina Keys walked across the track infield carrying a bag from McDonald’s. She walked past teammates who were stretching before beginning sprint workouts.

Several area athletes out front in 3A track regional

PASCO – Deja Svastislee quit thinking about the lack of competition during the season, deciding to focus on doing all she could to bring her times down. The North Central senior was challenged a little more than usual Saturday at the 3A regional track meet, but she still won the title in the 300-meter hurdles in decisive fashion. She trimmed three-tenths of a second off her personal best with a time of 44.56 seconds.

Success, heartbreak for area athletes at 4A regional track

PASCO – Suspense and heartbreak hovered over the Mead boys track team again Saturday at the 4A regional meet at Edgar Brown Stadium. Mead sophomore hurdler Bryan Anderson won three times even though he ran in just two events – twice taking the 110-meter hurdles in a race that had to be re-run after a starter’s gun inadvertently went off as the athletes were going over the second hurdles.

Mt. Spokane dominates 3A district track meet

The Mt. Spokane boys and girls track teams’ regular-season dominance was evident by leaps and bounds as the District 8 3A meet concluded Friday at Spokane Falls Community College. Each team qualified several athletes to the regional meet, which is next Friday and Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.

Warm weather gets District 8 track and field off to hot start

The athletes appreciated the warmth and the results showed it Thursday in the first day of the District 8 4A and 3A track meets. Central Valley senior Mariah Cunningham had the most success, recording individual firsts in the 4A high jump and long jump and running a leg on the winning 400-meter relay at Spokane Falls Community College.
